Applications for 2018 entry are open and are made via UCAS Teacher Training.

This course aims to enable you to meet, and exceed, the Teacher Standards’ criteria as set out by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) for teaching across the primary phase of education through:

  • Exploring how learning links to the development of ourselves as teachers and the pupils with whom we work;
  • Harnessing the power of research and professional knowledge as a key part of our own reflective practice and theory building;
  • Promoting creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning;
  • Taking account of the role of education in developing the whole person by modelling a reflective and enquiry based approach to learning, promoting learning in a broad range of local, national and international contexts and exploring sustainability as a key feature of learning for the present and the future; and by promoting core educational values such as honesty, compassion, integrity and the pursuit of wisdom;
  • Promoting equality of opportunity in all learning environments;
  • Monitoring, evaluating and assessing the impact of the learning environment on all learners;
  • Providing individual support and development for learners based on their individual needs and endeavours to build respectful learning communities.

This means that the course will not restrict you to a limited age-range for your career, and it will help in preparing you to teach all subjects of the primary curriculum.

The course will support you in meeting the NCTL requirement to teach across two consecutive age-phases, and within two different school settings.

The course will also encourage you to be able to start moulding specific interests for your intended career. For example, you will be able to request whether to be based with 3-7, 7-9 or 9-11 age-phase for some professional placements andyou will have opportunity to select from a range of module options for your Enhanced Study. Similarly, there will be opportunity within the programme to apply for a professional placement in a SEN school.

There is in addition an opportunity to express a specific interest with foreign languages at the time of your application (separate application code). By doing so, you will still be aiming towards the same PGCE Primary qualification but will have some additional opportunities to engage with foreign language learning and teaching during the main programme.

This includes an automatic place on the ‘Languages in the Primary Curriculum’ Enhanced Study module option. It includes, at the time of writing, priority opportunity for a self-funded two-week research placement offered as part of this module option, in Germany, France and Spain.

We are also currently able to support a year-long subscription to an online language enhancement programme. The precise nature of such enhanced languages opportunities may vary from those stated here, depending on any unforeseen changing contexts that our partners, or indeed we ourselves may subsequently experience. Every endeavour will of course be taken to ensure such enrichment opportunities for languages are however maintained.

The School of Teacher Education and Development, within which this course resides, enjoys a strong partnership with local primary schools and early years settings. They are fully involved in all aspects of the programme, including recruitment and selection, course planning and development, leading support for your progress against the Teacher Standards when you are on placement, and grading you against the Teacher Standards.    

The programme is aimed at graduates who have a real passion, enthusiasm and commitment towards joining the teaching profession as a primary-phase teacher, and who seek to become the very best teacher and ‘leader of learning’ they can.

The more understanding you bring with you about the nature of teaching and learning in UK primary schools from the early years up to Year 6, and the role of the professional teacher, the better. That is why a minimum of 10 days experience in a primary school setting/working with children is a condition of being offered a place on the PGCE Primary course.

Please note: having been accepted onto the programme, you would then be required to independently arrange and complete a further period of preliminary observation time in a primary school, currently 10 days, completing an Independent Study Pack in preparation for the official start of the programme.

On successfully completing your PGCE, as well as moving into completing your NQT year and pursing your teaching career, there is also potential for you to engage in further study for a full Masters’ degree and on to a Doctorate in Education.

All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Professional Studies, Curriculum Studies and Enhanced Studies. All learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and your academic study will be both informed by, and also inform, practice. PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time (e.g. weeks) and serial days or ’invasion’ days ( day a week) adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.

Following successful completion of this course, the usual next step is to seek employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher and to successfully pass that part of your induction into the teaching profession. From there, your teaching career can take you on to a very rewarding and exciting professional journey involving learning and teaching, leadership and management, research and advisory roles.  

This full-time PGCE course will comprise a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops tutorials and self-study, balanced with your periods of professional practice. You can expect to be busy, and it is a full time commitment.

Currently for example:

Term 1 is a blend of university based sessions and your first professional practice and assignment.

Term 2 comprises university based sessions, serial and research days in school, and your second professional practice. Your other two assignments are due during this term.

Term 3 largely comprises your final professional practice, and completion of your Record of Development.

You will be taught and supported by a range of academic tutors and professional colleagues from our school partnership. It is worth noting that academic tutors on this course also have QTS and teaching experience.

You will be assessed in two main ways, via academic assignments and assessment of their teaching.

You will submit three academic assignments for 20 Level 7 credits in each curriculum, enhanced and professional studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to each assignment. You will also be required to develop and complete an ongoing record of your professional practice and engagement.

Professional practice will be formally assessed at the end of each professional placement, or which there are three. Each must be successfully passed in order to progress through the course. At the end of your final placement you will be awarded your final grading against each of the Teacher Standards.

You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) is awarded to students who pass all modules and who gain 40 or 60 Level 7 credits. The Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) is awarded to students who pass all modules on the programme and with less than 40 Level 7 credits.  All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.

Generous, tax-free funding is available to the best graduates training in a range of subjects. For instance, if you teach secondary maths, you could get £30,000 – £20,000 tax-free bursary while you train and a further £10,000 after tax once in teaching.

You do not need to apply for a bursary – if you are accepted on to a non-salaried postgraduate course and meet the eligibility criteria you will receive information on the bursary prior to your enrolment on the course.

Scholarships of up to £28,000 are awarded to the most gifted trainees in a range of areas and in partnership with highly regarded professional subject associations.

Loans and other funding

With or without a bursary or scholarship, you could receive a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan to help fund your teacher training year. Alternatively, you could earn a salary while you train.

Visit GOV.UK and use the  student finance calculator to estimate student loans and extra funding that may be available, e.g. if you’re disabled or have children.

PGCE Alumni Discount

Christ Church is offering a 10% Alumni Discount on a range of PGCEs starting in 2018-19. A further 10% Alumni Discount is also available for students who are not in receipt of a Department of Education bursary, professional subject association scholarship or not eligible to receive a Christ Church grant/bursary.

Criteria for eligibility

The PGCE alumni discount is available in two parts:

  •  A 10% tuition fee discount for CCCU alumni, as follows:
    • for students who are studying the full PGCE (primary or secondary) - 10% discount of the full tuition fee for students who are self-funding their tuition fees (i.e. the discount will not be applied if the student is being sponsored and the Sponsor is paying for the tuition fees);
    • for students who are studying the PGCE School Direct - 10% discount of the additional fee for the PGCE ‘top-up’ element of the programme only (i.e. 10% of the ‘top-up’ fee of £3,290 which is paid over and above the training fee of £5,960).

It should be noted that the discount will not apply to the School Direct training fee element for any School Direct students, whether they are Salaried or Unsalaried. The discount will only apply to the additional fee for the PGCE ‘top-up’ if students are self-funding that element of the fee.

  • An additional 10% tuition fee discount (on the same basis as above) for the following CCCU alumni
    • for students who are not in receipt of a DfE bursary and who are not eligible to receive a CCCU grant / bursary;
    • for students who are not in receipt of a DfE bursary, but who are eligible for a CCCU grant / bursary, students will receive either the additional 10% PGCE alumni discount OR the CCCU grant / bursary (whichever is higher and therefore of most benefit to the student).

Free DBS Check and Equivalency Tests

If you have an offer of a place to study a PGCE (primary or secondary) in 2018-19, Christ Church will fund your DBS Check and Equivalency Tests.

Before you start the course you will need to have undertaken both a DBS and Occupational Health clearance through the University.

Offers of a place on the programme are conditional, subject to successful completion of the Occupational Health clearance, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance and completion of the Government’s professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy.

Professional Placement: You should be aware that schools have the right to terminate a professional placement at any time during the course if they believe that pupil learning/progress is being unduly compromised, or with any serious professional conduct and/or safeguarding issues.

Maintaining good levels of professional conduct throughout the course is therefore critical for successful completion. (Professional regulations apply to this programme; see the Professional Code of Conduct, NCTL).Any serious breaches of professional misconduct would necessarily be referred to a Professional Capability Panel.
