Our SKE English course offers the flexibility of studying online and is tailored to your individual subject knowledge needs.

For English we are currently offering an 8-week course.

Courses are free for those eligible for funding (see 'Fees, Funding & Bursaries' section below).

The English Subject Knowledge Enhancement course aims, through a blend of self-directed learning and online tutorials, to:

  • refresh, consolidate and improve your English language and literature subject knowledge;
  • promote independant learning, improve meta-cognative skills and develop your ability to identify and address your own learning needs.

The course is designed to meet your subject knowledge needs. Study is flexible and can fit around your lifestyle and commitments.

The course is designed for:

  • Pre-Initial Teacher Training (ITT) applicants who need to strengthen their existing subject knowledge.
  • Serving teachers who need to strengthen their existing subject knowledge.
  • Anyone who would like to improve their subject knowledge.

All the SKE course content is accessed online.

  • The course starts with an online induction followed by an initial test to help you identify areas to focus on. Throughout the course, you participate in the weekly online tutorials, work through the self-directed study materials and add your work to an e-portfolio.  At the end of the course, a final test measures your progress;
  • You are expected to spend a minimum average of 25 hours a week working on the course.

Successful completion of the course is measured through engagement with the course, progress in the course tests and submitting an e-portfolio.

This is a non-credit bearing course.

Technical Requirements

You must have the following:

  • a desktop or laptop personal computer (Windows or Mac);
  • a reliable internet connection;
  • a headset with microphone and USB connection.

For further details: Full technical specifications (pdf)

Please note: If you do not have the equipment listed, you will need to purchase it as funding is not available for IT equipment.

The course requires your active participation to undertake research, solve problems and analyse data. Topics are approached in meaningful contexts in order to encourage you to explore concepts rather than to simply accept knowledge, and to look at what may be familiar subject knowledge in a different way and therefore develop a better understanding of the subject. This approach will help you to model the pedagogic approach that has been proven to facilitate learning in the classroom.

The aim is to direct you to construct your own knowledge through carrying out a series of tasks and activities. You are expected to form a deeper understanding of the concepts behind the issues under discussion and to form an appreciation of their wider context. Where possible, ideas encountered in the on-demand material are linked to classroom practice and vested in practical science.

The course looks briefly at Key Stage 3 themes and approaches, continuing through and beyond Key Stage 4 to secure your subject knowledge sufficiently to support your teaching at AS/A-level, if required. Most of the sessions have a task associated with them which SKE participants are expected to undertake. These tasks are generally of higher GCSE or A-level standard.

Funding and Bursaries for Pre-ITT Applicants

For those students with a conditional ITT offer dependent upon completing an SKE course, the course fee is fully funded, subject to certain eligibility requirements.  Bursaries of £200 per week are also available to these students to help support them throughout the course.

We deal with funding and bursary requests as part of the application process. Please note your ITT provider will provide an appropriate course length as part of your ITT offer. If you have any course length queries please contact your ITT provider.

For full information, read our SKE Funding and Bursary Guidance (pdf).

Applicants who do not meet the pre-ITT funding criteria (e.g. those who hold QTS) will need to pay the tuition fee.

(According to the CCCU SKE Student Evaluation Survey)

I embarked on my teaching career by first undertaking the Subject Knowledge Enhancement course with Canterbury Christ Church University. I found all the pre-recorded sessions extremely informative in refreshing my knowledge, some topics of which I had not thought about so deeply for almost 20 years, since taking my undergraduate degree. The weekly live tutorials brought the subject back to life and enabled me to think about how I could teach at GCSE and A Level. I appreciated the development of the online portfolio and once complete I really felt that I had achieved something so great in such a short space of time (8 weeks). The online resources were plentiful and gave me scope to develop ideas further. As I was abroad for more than half of the course I found no problem in accessing the resources, sessions, portfolio and tutorials. I would recommend the SKE at CCCU to anyone who is thinking of becoming a teacher. Thank you to all the lecturers, tutors and support staff for making such an enjoyable and informative course.
