Our Career Leadership course has been approved by the Careers Enterprise Company to provide the knowledge and skills needed to effectively lead careers work in a school or college.

It will ensure that the leadership and management of careers provision in your school is in line with government policy and statutory guidance. It will also provide you with the resources and processes to provide young people with a high quality careers provision that will support their career progression and ambitions, and that achieves all of the eight Gatsby Benchmarks.

The University Certificate in Career Leadership course is ideal if you are a newly appointed school careers leader or have been doing the work of a careers leader for some time.

You will consolidate and build on your current experience and embed your knowledge and skills in the theoretical basis of careers work in your practice, so that you can improve, develop and grow your careers programme.

      All about the course

The course is designed around the four key areas of careers leadership:

      • Leadership
      • Management
      • Coordination
      • Networking

These areas are addressed through 13 sessions of learning.

      Entry requirements

Level 5 credits or relevant experience.

      How you’ll learn

The total number of teaching and learning hours is 174. This includes self-study, attendance, activities and employer visits.

All teaching and learning sessions will be available through our virtual learning environment. Maximum use of this medium will be made with the blended learning option.

For those sessions attended in person, sessions will be interactive, practical and discussion based. One of the aims of this course is to share good practice and to learn from each other. So discussion, on and off line is essential to build a grounding in reflective practice and continual evaluation and improvement. Online learning is also designed to share ideas, good practice and to stimulate discussion and debate.

We will share ideas, resources and activities so that, at the end of the course we have created a sustainable ongoing community of practice.

The course is led by Dr Anne Chant and delivered by a team of experienced and fully qualified careers practitioners.

      How you’ll be assessed

For those wishing to achieve 20 credits at Level 6, a written assignment will be submitted at the end of the course. This work will be developed and supported throughout the course and additional workshops and tutorials will be available.

      Your future career

Completion of the course and the attainment of 20 credits at level 6 will give you access to further study at Christ Church, including our MA Career Management. This programme incorporates the ‘gold standard’ careers qualifications, the QCD, which includes career guidance and counselling skills and enables you to not only lead careers work in your school but also to offer one to one and group counselling and guidance.

Alternatively, you could choose to apply to a provider of the OCR Level 6 Diploma and apply for recognition of prior learning to have the credits from this course accepted as part of that diploma. We will provide a mapping of the learning outcomes of our course against the OCR learning outcomes for this purpose.
