If you’re interested in a broad range of performance areas such as dance, drama, vocal studies or creative theatre production then this course is for you.
You will pursue a variety of subjects spanning a wide range of Performing Arts activities covering performance, technical operation, management and design. This will give you the flexibility to develop your art as you get to grips with the realities and practicalities of performance and production.
You’ll get to participate in shows every year where every aspect of the production, front and back of house, is managed by students.

There's a strong practical element to the course and you'll be able to refine your artistic talents in dedicated performance spaces that are designed to inspire you.

As you progress through your degree you will explore a wide variety of modules that examine the Performing Arts industry as a whole. You will cover performance techniques whilst developing management skills. You will learn how to control performance technology systems as well as working practically in examining elements of design. You will learn how to discuss and articulate theoretical concepts relating to a whole range of performance styles and at the same time devise your own performance work to demonstrate your combined skillset.
A major part of the Performing Arts degree is the exploration of those skills most associated with performing on stage. With that in mind, your Performance Techniques modules run across all three years and focus on acting, singing and dancing. You'll explore a variety of acting, dancing and singing techniques and styles and engage in performance making across all three disciplines. You will engage with practical methodologies and rehearsal techniques whilst developing a greater vocal and physical performance awareness, flexibility, and versatility in your performance method and style. You will learn how to enhance your communication with fellow performers and an audience alike, and you'll explore different ways to approach spaces and to present performance.
Mastering all three performance areas is no mean feat and so you can focus your final assessments on your strongest two. You will always have the opportunity to explore performance making and presentation across the three main disciplines but won’t be hamstrung if one of these doesn’t develop as fully as the others.
You'll learn about design concepts relating to the various production areas that come together to create a theatrical mise en scène.
You'll gain a broad understanding of the ways in which the practical elements relating to costume, prop, lighting, sound and staging, communicate with one another on a functional level and how practitioners working in these areas collaborate with respect to a final performance product.
You will explore the very specific roles relating to managing performance for large-scale events together with examples of how those roles conflate to a more all-encompassing single management role for small performance companies. You'll have the opportunity to explore these various functions of performance organisation and you'll develop practical skills by facilitating various performances throughout the academic year. You'll also work on student-devised projects where you'll perform different roles within stage management teams.
You’ll explore how current technologies are helping to shape contemporary performance practice. Using specialist software you will develop interactive performance and installation designs and analyse the ways in which digital tools can be used to develop immersive performance and installation spaces.
Theatre can be a powerful tool in the way that we shape our communities, educate our children and speak out about social issues. You’ll explore the ways and the means that theatre makers use to engage an audience for a variety of purposes.
Understanding the equipment and the techniques that make our performance experience look and sound fantastic is an important part of understanding the performance and production process. You’ll have the opportunity to work with lighting rigs, sounds systems and digital visualisation tools to help bring your performance vision to life.

You'll be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops and will have access to a range of online and other library resources.
Seminars in smaller groups will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics. You'll also meet regularly with your personal academic tutor.

When not attending seminars, workshops or other timetabled sessions you will continue learning through self-study. Typically, this involves practice, rehearsal and preparing for assessments. You will also be reading journal articles and books, undertaking research in the library, working on directed tasks or projects, and preparing for coursework assignments/examinations, workshops and seminars.
Your module tutor will direct you towards specific readings and/or activities to complete before each class.
For the independent project/dissertation in Year 3, you will undertake independent research working under the supervision of a member of the course team who you'll meet with regularly.
For every 20 credit module there is 50 hours of contact time and typically 150 hours of additional study time to undertake directed tasks, readings, rehearsals, practice, research and assignments.
There are six full-time contracted members of staff involved in this course, who spread their time across Performing Arts and Drama teaching.
Dr. Angela Pickard, subject lead, is a principal lecturer and has extensive experience as a performer (dancer), choreographer, manager and academic. She has published work on creativity, storytelling, role play and educational drama techniques.
All staff on this course have industry experience as performers, community practitioners and in academia in higher education.
The Performing Arts course enables you to gain understanding of being a performer on stage as you study dance, acting and singing, but also behind the scenes of performance with modules in, for example, stagecraft and theatre design. A great deal of practical performance is built into the programme. Students will engage in the various processes of production, rehearsal, performance, presentation of seminars and workshop leadership. The participation of those students who perform within performance workshops and masterclasses will provide the opportunity for their performances to be analysed and performance practice developed.
Whilst the practical component of many modules is important, most modules require an element of written work as part of the assessment strategy.
You will know how to market yourself in print, online, and in person. What areas you pursue, in a multi-faceted industry, will be up to you. You may audition to perform. You may work with an arts organisation. You may undertake further study in Masters courses or set up a business as a freelance entrepreneur. Some students choose to apply to study for a teaching qualification as a PGCE or Schools Direct.
