For those who have completed a relevant foundation degree – such as our Childhood Studies course – the BA Childhood Studies top-up is the key to the next stage of your career or the next phase of study.
This course is delivered on a 'twilight' basis, with teaching taking place after 5pm at the Learning and Enterprise College, Bexley, and is led by award-winning academics who are also experienced childhood practitioners. Upon successful completion, you will have gained a degree which opens all kinds of doors and career paths.
A BA Childhood Studies is also the foundation upon which you can build your route to qualified teacher status by taking a relevant postgraduate course, such as a PGCE. It is flexible and can be completed part-time around your work, or full-time over the course of a year. Moreover, the same passionate and experienced academics who run the foundation degree will support you on every step to success.
This exciting area of study explores the influences that shape children’s development and learning, their personalities, and the critical periods that will shape their journeys to adulthood.
This course is ideal for you if you have already completed the Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies and are working with children and young people aged 0-19 years in settings such as schools, nurseries, childcare, foster care, child minders, youth groups, cadets, or library services.
The course teaching is delivered on a twilight basis, where teaching is delivered after 5pm at the Learning and Enterprise College in Bexley.
You will study a variety of areas relevant to the support and development of children and young people with a focus on work-related methods. You will be able to critically reflect on and analyse these issues from an academic perspective whilst relating to and evaluating these against your work-based professional practice.
You will complete 120 credits (Level 6) which build on your previous 240 credits (at Levels 4 and 5) gained from your foundation degree course or equivalent.
As well as studying at University, you should be working in a child-related role (paid or voluntary) for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
You are required to hold 240 credits of advanced standing (usually a foundation degree or similar; for example, a diploma of higher education or other accumulated credits at Levels 4 and 5) in a related area.
GCSE English language grade C (or equivalent) is also a requirement. If you do not have English at GCSE grade C or above, you will be required to take and pass the University equivalency tests for entry onto this course.
In order to study the SEN specialism at Level 6/BA Hons level, you will need to have been awarded relevant specialist credits at Levels 4 and 5.

You must be in a full-time work-based role (paid or voluntary), spending at least 15 hours per week in a child or young people's setting.
Entry is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (completed by the employer).
Please note that the list of optional modules and their availability may be subject to change. We continually review and where appropriate, revise the range of modules on offer to reflect changes in the subject and ensure the best student experience. Modules will vary when studied in combination with another subject.
You will be taught face-to-face at the Learning & Enterprise College Bexley. It is intended that the teaching would take place on one evening per week (over five weeks) per module - dependent on the chosen location. Evening attendance is via a 'blended' approach and an occasional attendance on one Saturday morning per module may be required.
The course has the equivalent of 35 taught hours and 75 hours of work-based learning.
All courses are informed by the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy 2015-2022.
You are expected to carry out around 90 hours of independent research and study for each module.

On completion of your Childhood Studies degree, you may wish to progress to a postgraduate teacher training course. You may choose to undertake a School Direct course or a PGCE. If you already have a wealth of teaching experience, you may be eligible to enter the 'Assessment Only' route to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Graduates have progressed on to a variety of social work and specialist courses, such as speech and language, and art therapy. Many students have continued onto Masters level study.

There needs to be a minimum of 15 students to be able to run the cohort. If we are unable to attract enough students then the cohort will not run. Where we are unable to run a cohort, we will contact anybody affected via the email address given on the application form. We would normally expect to offer those affected the opportunity to join the next cohort of the course at either at the original location, or at an alternative venue (once again, this is subject to the minimum number of students being recruited).
You are expected to work in child-based setting (this can be a paid or voluntary role) for a minimum of 15 hours per week. If you are not able to find work in a child-based setting, you may not be able to complete your studies.
