Mental Health

Many of us are affected from time to time by anxiety, low-mood or feelings of not fitting in. If these symptoms become overwhelming, or start to have a serious negative impact on your studies and day to day life, you are likely to benefit from additional support.

What support is available?

Our Mental Health Practitioners can help with general mental health-related queries and emotional distress.  They have a range of services they can offer including self-help resources and techniques to help with anxiety, stress and depression.  They can also refer individuals for counselling both within the University and externally.

If you have a long term psychological condition that has been diagnosed by a medical professional you will be entitled to further support including advice on funding and  Learning Support Plans (LSP).

You can talk to our Mental Wellbeing Team at drop-in sessions at Augustine House as follows:

  • Monday - Thursday, 12:00 - 13:00 in AHg59, Augustine House
  • Friday, 12:00 - 13:00 in Fg08, North Holmes Road

When you arrive at the drop-in, you will find a booking in sheet to secure your slot.  Please place your initials next to your preferred time slot and we will come and find you near the booking in sheet at that time.

The  University Chaplains offer a confidential listening service in a safe space where you can talk through any problems in a non-judgmental environment.

University Medical Centre Psychological Therapies is available to all students who are registered with a GP Surgery within East Kent who would like help with a psychological problem.

They provide support with depression, stress, anxiety, trauma, phobias, disorders, relationship difficulties and much more.

Support on offer include:

  • Guided Self Help
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy
  • Counselling
  • Courses
  •  Support Groups

An initial assessment will be offered within 3 days of making contact and dependent upon the treatment you require your first appointment will be within 6 weeks or sooner.

The Big White Wall  is a free 24/7 online service that allows you to get support, take control and feel better. It’s a safe and anonymous space you can go to if you’re feeling down, struggling to cope or just want to talk to people who understand what you’re going through. Whether you want to speak to peers or a counsellor, there will be someone there every minute of every day.

Signing up is easy – go to www.bigwhitewall.com and use your University email address to join. The email address is only used to confirm you have free access and then you pick an anonymous username so everything remains completely confidential. 

Working with the NHS, Canterbury Christ Church University, has a range of online self-help guides covering different topics including Anxiety, Bereavement, Stress, Depression and Sleeping Problems. To explore the Self Help Online Library please click here

We recommend that you register with a GP who can support you with any mental health issues and refer you, if needed.

 

Other Support 

If you want to talk to someone straightaway, not at the University or out of hours the following organisations are available

  • The Big White Wall - is a free 24/7 online service that allows you to get support, take control and feel better
  • Nightline - a student-run listening and information service offering a safe, non-judgemental environment for students to talk about their feelings and gain emotional-support and information. Call 01227 824848 between 8pm-8am Friday and Saturday; Email  listening@canterbury.nightline.ac.uk where someone will reply within 72 hours or Instant Messenger on canterbury.nightline.ac.uk between 8pm-2am and 6am-8am Friday and Saturday
  • The Samaritans: 116 123 for confidential, emotional support 24/7 and if you are feeling suicidal. (You can also visit the Canterbury branch. Usual hours 8am-8pm Monday to Saturday) or email jo@samaritans.org
  • 24/7 Mental Health Matters Helpline: 0800 107 0160. Confidential emotional support and guidance. They also have details of local and national support services.

Emergency Support

If you feel you are a risk to yourself or another person:

  • Contact the emergency services on 999 if you feel you need support from the police or ambulance service.
  • Also contact University Security on extension 01227 92 2111
