Profile summary

Katja is originally from Pori, Finland but has lived in the UK for over a decade, studying and working at different universities. She completed her joint honours BSc in Psychology and Criminology at the University of Teesside and a MSc in Investigative Psychology at University of Liverpool. Between 2005 and 2012 she studied and worked at the University of Manchester, completing a PhD in 'Police Professionalisation via Academic Education' whilst teaching on a variety of criminology and multi-disciplinary modules. Katja joined the Canterbury Christ Church University in September 2012. She lectures in areas of policing, criminology and criminal psychology, as well as mentoring on the university's HEA Fellowship Acccrediation Programmes. She has been the Programme Director for the Policing Suite since June 2016. Her research interests include police education, training and professionalisation, as well as the link between sustainability and justice. 

Research and knowledge exchange

Current 'in progress' research projects (for indication of past projects, please see below on publications and research outputs)

  • HE and Policing, second stage: exploring the pathways of academic police education, with focus on individual officers embarking on them, particularly in regard to 1) background, foreground and future-oriented drivers and motivators, 2) facilitators and inhibitors 3) responses, and 4) outcomes. Co-researcher: Dr Tom Cockcroft, Leeds Beckett University
  • Criminal Justice and Sustainability’, the initial scoping exercise seeks to develop an understanding of the current CJS activities/policies that would fall under the broad sustainability umbrella (including all four dimensions of environmental, social, cultural and economic)

  • Police and policing, particularly police training and education, police professionalisation, and organisational culture
  • Sociology of professions
  • Diversity issues within criminal justice context, particularly hate crime, vulnerable people, gender and sexuality
  • Sustainability and justice (social, environmental, cultural and economic), including education for sustainable development
  • Qualitative research methods, particularly interviewing and use of narrative techniques of data collection and analysis
