Profile summary

Mr Martin J. Southam is a Senior Lecturer and is the Programme Director for the Sport and Exercise Psychology and Sport & Exercise Science programmes at CCCU. Mr Southam studied the sport & exercise sciences at undergraduate & postgraduate level at CCCU, and has represented the University at football, hockey & basketball.

Research and knowledge exchange

Martin's research & knowledge exchange work is primarily in the area of performance psychology in sport and he contributes to the workshop programme of SportsLab and has consulted with numerous athletes & clubs in Kent.

Teaching and subject expertise

Martin contributes to the undergraduate programmes in the areas of the social psychology of sport, individual psychology in sport performance and he supervises dissertation studies in these fields. Mr Southam absolutely relishes teaching in all areas and is responsible for the second year module ‘Psychology of Sport’.

External activities

Martin is an active sports person and he regularly runs both at home and abroad (most recently in Helsinki, Finland).  Martin is a keen footballer, plays hockey & captains a side at a local club, is a level 1 hockey coach and 1 star canoeist.

Martin is a passionate sports fan, and regularly attends varied sports events in the UK (including NFL, Football, Netball & Cricket fixtures), as well as in diverse places abroad including Australia (AFL), Germany (EuroHockey), Sweden (Ice Hockey) & the USA (Baseball).
