Colm has a B.A. Hons in Information Management and an MSc in Computing and Information Systems. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and is qualified at postgraduate certificate level for the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHET) and has a PhD from The Queens University of Belfast, specialising in the strategic evaluation of information systems (IS) and supply chain projects for corporate organisations.

Colm worked as an eBusiness consultant and senior product manager for nevadatele.com, the Irish subsidiary of Energis UK (PLC). He has also worked in a consultancy capacity with SME's and corporates implementing various eBusiness and business strategy related initiatives.

He is Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an academic member of the CIPD. Colm acts as a reviewer for leading international journals such as: European Journal of Training and Development; International Journal of HRM; Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies; Education and Training; Higher Education, Skills and Work based Learning; School Leadership and Management; Studies in Higher Education.

He is currently on the Academic Committee for the Institute of Administrative Management. He is also on the Editorial Advisory Boards of:

  • Journal of Management Development;
  • Development and Learning in Organizations; 
  • European Journal of Training and Development.

Colm has recently acted as a conference reviewer for the British Academy of Management (BAM), European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), the Institute of Small Business and Enterpreneurship (ISBE), and is a member of various Special Interest Groups. He has also been  involved in international conference planning.

Research and knowledge exchange

Colm has a track record of funding with European projects, and small awards for knowledge transfer and teaching cases.

He is currently (2017/18) working with Prof. Heather McLaughlin (Coventry) on a major eMartime research project. In addtion (2017/18), he is working with Dr Wim van Vuuren (CCCU), Prof. Geert Duysters (Tilburg) and Dr Marco Furlotti (Nottingham Trent) on Young Enterprise team dynamics, and enterprise research - based in the Netherlands. Colm is also working on various leadership and employee engagement research projects with Dr Stefanos Nachmias (Nottingham Trent), and information systems research with Dr Stephen Jackson (Royal Holloway) and Dr Federico Iannacci (CCCU).  

Colm has various collaborators and co-authors in applied and policy research areas such as:

  • international business research and technology management;
  • transformative effects of social enterprise and the power of local communities;
  • enterprise learning for HE students;
  • employee engagement and career decision-making;
  • public sector research in UK policing;
  • innovative policy-making in schools, higher education and the public/third sector.
     

Teaching and subject expertise

Colm is the director of postgraduate programmes. He currently teaches Strategy and Globalisation and Work Related Learning and Employability. He teaches Research Methods for the postgraduate MSc International Business and MBA (Graduate) (with Dr Federico Iannacci). He also shares module leadership for the strategy module (with Mr John Molloy) on the specialist part-time MBA's in Leadership and Health Care Management, and the MBA in Leadership and Education. In addition, he leads the Change Management module on the Business School's Postgraduate Certificate in Collaborative Transformation(s). He also teaches on the CIPD advanced diploma course.

In the past, he has taught and led on a variety of business and management subjects including: Leadership and Personal Development; Business Strategy; Project Management; Systems Analysis and Design; Business Information Technology, IT and the new International Supply Chain. In addtion, he supervises several postgraduate (Masters) students, across various programmes/ subject disciplines.

External activities

He has authored for articles in leading international journals and conferences, and been part of expert meetings for the European Commission and Port Authorities in the area of eMaritime. 

Colm is currently supervising a number of MSc, MA students in the areas of Business and Management. He also helps supervise or chair PhD panels in areas such as: social enterprise and social entrepreneurship; leadership and organisational transformation; policing performance, governance and changing culture.
