Profile summary

Dr Mark Uphill, BSc (Chichester), PGCE (Staffs), MSc (Exeter), PhD (Staffs), joined Canterbury Christ Church University in 2003, and is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology. He completed his PhD from Staffordshire University on the Antecedents, Consequences and Regulation of Emotions in Sport in 2005. Mark is a BPS Chartered Psychologist, HCPC Registered Sport Psychologist, and BASES Accredited Sport Scientist. 

Research and knowledge exchange

Mark has an inquisitive, pragmatic, and collegiate approach to research. Mark's research is broadly directed toward helping individuals flourish in and through participation in sport and physical activity. In particular, recent research has contributed theoretical, empirical, applied, and critical approaches to enhancing athletes' "mental wealth" (see below). Mark enjoys working with undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level students to facilitate the development of new knowledge, and he actively encourages students to publish at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Mark has successfully supervised a number of PhD and DClin students to completion, and is supervising doctoral research in the following areas:

Social support and injury recovery;

Mental resilience and coaches;

Challenge and Threat in athletes

Mark is the Lead Sport Psychologist for the University's SportsLab and contributes to third steam income directly and indirectly (e.g., through consultancy activities of supervisees) for the university.

Research grants:

2010: British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) position statement grant on emotion regulation in sport, alongside Andy Lane, Chris Beedie, Marc Jones, and Tracy Devonport (£1,500)

2018: Evalaution of the Sport England Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme in Further Education Institutions in England, alongside Lucinda Howland, Abby Foad, Philip Hurst, Dan Stretch (£16,500)

Teaching and subject expertise

At undergraduate level, Mark contributes to Research Methods at Level 5, teaches sport psychology across levels 4 - 6, and convenes the Level 6 Applied Sport Psychology module. Mark has taught at MSc Level and is currently involved in the Doctoral Supervision of a number of students, including PhD, DClin, and Stage 2 trainees. Mark acted as the programme director on our undergraduate BSc Psychology (Sport and Exercise) programme for a number of years and is currently working on enhancing our Master's level provision in Sport Psychology 

External activities

Mark is engaged in a range of exernal activities, acting as an external examiner on undergraduate (BSc Sport and Exercise Science) and Doctoral programmes.  Mark has been an integral member of a number of external organsiations including the  British Psychological Society's Division of Behaviour Change Advisory Group and has been Hon Sec for the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology. He is also on the BPS' Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors. Mark has been a BASES reviewer and supervisor and is now acting as the external exmainer on the new SEPAR accredited programme. Alongside these professional roles, Mark is contributing to his own professional development as a BACP counsellor in training.
