Profile summary

After completing my undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science at Canterbury Christ Church University, I was awarded a joint scholarship and university instructor post and began my PhD in 2014.

My current position as university instructor requires me to provide teaching support on a range of modules.  My thesis,‘Interventions to improve Running Economy (RE) in Trained Runners’, asks whether splitting an athlete’s training into multiple daily sessions influences RE and energy expenditure.

As well as the above, my research interests include: the nutritional needs of athletes in training and competition, digestive health, tapering for competition, anti-doping in sport, working with a range of athletes from a recreational level to international standard, balancing the requirements of high level competition with real life, new technologies for performance testing.

I have over fifteen years’ experience of competing at a national and international level, previously at triathlon and duathlon, and now focus on running. I have achieved a marathon time of 2:16 and recently extended my running distance to ultra-marathon.  In 2014 I competed in the 50km World Champs in Doha finishing second and broke the Guinness World record for the fastest 100km run on a treadmill.  In 2015 I have been selected to race for England in the home international Anglo Celtic Plate, a 100km running race and the Comrades ultra-marathon in South Africa.
