Research topic

'Coming to terms with the past: The experience of Tamil refugees'

Supervisory team

  • Dr Dennis Nigbur - 1st supervisor
  • Dr Thomas Hennessey - 2nd supervisor

Research outline

My PhD project aims to explore how Sri Lankan Tamil refugees make sense of fleeing from their home country, becoming refugees and how they see the impact of their flight on their personal and social identities. More specifically, it looks at what importance and significance family, religion, occupation, nationality and other identities have in Tamil refugees’ daily lives. It also asks how they relate to the majority social group (i.e. British society). Data for this qualitative study will be collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results will be used to further explore the subject and to design an additional follow-up study.
