Politics Summer School

The Politics Summer School is jointly organised by Canterbury Christ Church University's (CCCU) Politics and International Relations programme and the Centre for European Studies (CEFEUS) at CCCU. This year's event will take place from 10–24 August 2019 in Canterbury, Kent.

We invite applications from undergraduate and postgraduate students, professionals, and those interested in federal studies, the European Union, institutional design in divided societies, conflict resolution and the link between federalism and good governance in different parts of the world.

The topic of this year's Summer School is “Federalism, Conflict Resolution, and Good Governance”. Participants will be introduced to different theories of federalism, its use in different countries around the world, the ways in which federalism and other forms of territorial autonomy can help mitigate conflict, and how federalism can contribute to good governance and democratization.

Lecturers include leading international academics, who have years of experience in their subject and have often been involved in policy advice as well. In addition to an interesting and challenging academic programme, students will be offered with an inspiring social programme, which includes a pub quiz on federalism and a guided tour of the wonderful city of Canterbury!

The programme also includes a visit to London and the Houses of Parliament!

Programme

Our academic programme brings together leading experts from all over the world to discuss different topics in the field of federalism and multinationalism. Some of the confirmed speakers include:

• Prof Dr David Bates, Canterbury Christ Church University (UK), who will speak on “Federalism and Anarchy”
• Dr Nicolas Schmitt, Institute of Federalism, University of Fribourg (Switzerland), who will speak on “Federalism in the German-speaking world”
• Dr Wilfried Swenden, University of Edinburgh, UK, who will speak on “Federalism and Decentralisation in Asia”
• Dr Elisabeth Alber, Institute of Comparative Federalism, European Academy Bolzano (Italy) who will speak on “Federalism and Minority Rights”
• Dr Soeren Keil, Canterbury Christ Church University, who will speak on "Federalism as a Tool of Conflict Resolution”
• Dr Paul Anderson, Canterbury Christ Church University, who will speak on “Territorial Autonomy and Secession”

In addition to a rich academic programme, we also organise a very interesting social programme. This includes a city tour of Canterbury, a pub quiz on federalism, a pizza night and an opening and farewell dinner. 

Costs

The costs for accommodation, hospitality and tuition are £1,500.00 per student. We are unable to provide scholarships or financial reductions. Full payment has to be made beforehand to the University, and no unconditional offer will be provided unless payment has been received. Please note, we are unable to accept cash payments on arrival and bank transactions from non-British bank accounts should make sure that the full sum is transferred to Canterbury Christ Church University. Students will be notified once payment has been received. We are unable to cover any travel costs or help with Visa Fees, we will however happily provide an invitation letter if you require a visa to come to the UK.

About the organisers

The Politics and International Relations programme at Canterbury Christ Church University has a tradition of offering innovative and exciting undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of Politics, International Relations and European Politics. Our staff team consists of experts in different areas with key expertise in applied political theory, minority rights, territorial autonomy and European Union politics. The programme is part of the School of Psychology, Politics and Sociology.
