Studying with Us

The Sociology team at Canterbury Christ Church University is dedicated to its students’ learning. We work very hard to ensure that we offer an excellent learning and teaching experience.

As Sociologists we know that students learn best when they are supported and when they feel a sense of community and belonging. We design our assessments to provide opportunities to learn new things rather than simply test knowledge.

Our curriculum is stimulating and up to date and you will learn to apply sociological ideas to make sense of real world issues and problems. We have been nationally recognised for the quality of our degree by the Higher Education Academy and the British Sociological Association, and our students have rated us well above the national average in the most recent National Student Survey. We strive to help you become high caliber sociology graduates and to maximise your future employment prospects. We seek to deliver these goals by providing dynamic teaching, varied assessment, practical research opportunities, and focused employability experiences

Dynamic teaching

Our lecturers are passionate about sociology and are committed to being great teachers. We strive to provide a learning environment that is stimulating, interactive and informed. In addition to attending lectures, you will have opportunities to be involved in seminar discussion, problem-based learning, role play, game scenarios, and group debates. We use a range of media within and outside the classroom to deliver a blended learning experience.

Varied assessment

in addition to essays and exams, we have embedded a suite of assessments into our programme to assess your learning and to develop an array of transferable skills. You can expect to give presentations, write case studies, blogs and organisational reports, evaluate data, undertake real research, and engage in self-reflection. For most students, the degree culminates in an individual study (dissertation) on a topic of your choice.

Practical experience

We recognise the importance of practical experience in helping you develop and enhance your sociological understanding. As part of your degree, you can choose to work with local organisations in the design and delivery of primary research, and to volunteer for local organisations in an array of different roles. You will also have to chance to work as an intern, helping members of the sociology team undertake their research. Our intern students have found the experience to be highly rewarding and of real practical value. Read more about our internships

Employability

The wide-ranging content of our degree prepares our students for a variety of careers within the public, private and third/charity sector. Our graduates are working as teachers and health workers, as human resource managers and civil servants, as journalists and social workers, as police officers and more.  Many of our students also choose to go onto further study including our own postgraduate programmes.  We embed a number of activities into our degree to get you ready for work. For example, as a final year student, you will be supported in producing a professional CV and covering letter, and you will hone your interviewing skills in a mock interview. This level of support has direct impact on our students’ career prospects: 95% of our most recent graduates were in jobs or further study six months after finishing their course.
