I studied a combined honours degree in ‘Applied Criminology and Sociology and Social Science’ between 2007 and 2010, choosing to major in Sociology in my final year. Since my time at CCCU I have qualified as a teacher and am now head of social sciences at a local secondary school. What makes CCCU stand out is the support given to students by lecturers. I was given a personalised experience through lectures, seminars and tutorials, which made the transition from A level to degree seem less daunting. The content covered was both thought-provoking and wide ranging, which meant it left many doors open when it came to deciding upon a career path. The facilities and support offered at CCCU enabled me to secure a first class honours degree at the end of my time there.

I use the knowledge and skills I gained from my degree every day. As a teacher, I see the wider implications of educational policy on classroom practice and decision making at the chalkboard. In addition, the breadth of knowledge I gained from the course means I am passionate about the subjects I teach. Outside of the workplace, I can see the sociology behind contemporary issues we read about in the newspaper. I felt the subject really helped me to grow as a person, as now I am able to consider issues from different perspectives, and am always open to changing my opinion once considering an issue in detail. That is the power of sociology; it teaches you to open your mind, and appreciate the complexity of our society, rather than taking things at face value. I truly loved my experience at CCCU and subsequently would always recommend studying there to my students.
