Why study Sociology with us

Sociology is a fascinating subject that investigates the ways in which social life is organised, structured and experienced. Here are five very good reasons to study Sociology at Canterbury Christ Church University:

1) Our students say our teaching is excellent

We have won individual and team awards for our teaching. We are very highly rated in the National Student Survey as our students tell us that they feel supported, engaged and inspired. You will only be taught by experienced academic staff – all of whom have a passion for teaching and are members of the Higher Education Academy. We don’t leave you to your own devices but help you navigate the demands of higher education.

2) Our degree has been designed to develop your 'sociological imagination'

We define Sociology as a way of thinking. You will find that our degree makes you look at the world in new ways. Employers value graduates who are able to think critically and analytically; graduates who are able to think differently. Studying sociology is a transformative experience as it changes the way you think about yourself and the world around you. This enables you to become an informed, responsible, ethically-sensitive citizen. We also help you with this by getting you involved in community projects and by showing you how sociology changes the world that it studies.

3) Our learning community is vibrant, safe and inclusive

We use ‘sociological imagination’ to shape our learning community. We know that students learn best when they feel that they belong. Our interactive teaching, our commitment to personal tutoring and our emphasis on building bonds between students in and out of the classroom, all work to produce a friendly, lively and supportive community.

4) We have designed our degree to enhance your employment prospects

A sociology degree is a great foundation for many occupations including social work, teaching, criminal justice, journalism, management and research. With us, you can choose modules that support particular career pathways and through a variety of assessments, both enhance your CV and expand your skill set such as report writing, presentations and group work. You will have the opportunity to volunteer, to reflect on any paid work and to be involved in real research projects.

5) Our academic staff are undertaking important research and you can get involved

You will hear about our research and may also have the opportunity to be involved through our research internship scheme. Our team are currently researching marriage and relationships, environmental protest, health, education, human trafficking, social media and social exclusion.
