Description

Join us for this event in which Dr. Allyn Thomas will explore the origins and context of Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, detentions under Section 136, the changing patterns of detentions and the reasons for these changes, as well as prospects for the future of Section 136.

Dr. Allyn Thomas has been a student, archaeologist, cinema projectionist and briefly in the army. He obtained a first-class degree from Liverpool University in Genetics and a few years later a Doctorate in Microbial Genetics from Nottingham University.
Aged 25 he joined the police as a constable and retired 30 years later as an Assistant Chief Constable in Kent Police. In his retirement he operated a mobile cinema operating out of village halls, assisted his wife with her bee keeping and then studied part time for a further PhD at the University of Kent examining the police involvement with people through Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
He continues this part time research examining the involvement of the police with people who are mentally ill or impaired.
