Dr Tom Sharkey

Lecturer in Criminal Justice and Academic Sessional

School of Law, Policing and Social Sciences

I am a Lecturer in Criminal Justice developing interdisciplinary learning and teaching across the School of Law, Policing and Social Sciences

I joined CCCU as a PhD student in 2017 and began my current role working as a lecturer across the School in 2023. I have previously been teaching on the Politics and International Relations, Arts and Education, and Law programmes as a sessional lecturer.

Having completed my PhD in Political Theory and Art, I have developed a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. My research connects radical political thought, applied political and social theory, and arts practice. I was project co-ordinator of CCCU's component of the Tate Exchange programme and have been able to apply this experience within my teaching at CCCU.

I received my BA (hons) in Drama and English and American Literature and my MA in Art, Politics and Resistance from the University of Kent.

In my current role I am developing interdisciplinary learning and teaching, alongside teaching across a variety of modules in the Politics and Law programmes.

I am the managing editor of the European Review of International Studies.

My main focus is on political theory and I teach this across all levels of the Politics programme.

I am module lead on Contemporary Political Theory and also teach across a number of modules including: British Politics:  Continuity, Change and Crisis; Public Law 1 and 2; and How to Change the World.

My research explores the border between politics and art, with a particular focus on the ethics of anarchism.

My published work has explored this area and connected this to electoral politics through humour studies.
