Richard is the Course Director for MCh Surgery within the Institute of Medical Sciences.

I graduated as a medical doctor from St. George's, University of London in 2008 and completed my Foundation training in Kent before training as an anaesthetist in the East of England Deanery. In 2021, I completed a PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences from the University of Kent, successfully defending my thesis on 'Gross Efficiency in Cycling: The Effect of Intensity and Duration'. I am a fully registered medical doctor on the General Medical Council (GMC) register as well as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

I have been a Lecturer within the Institute of Medical Sciences since 2018 and previously held the position of Course Director for the Physician Associate studies MSc between 2021-2023. I was appointed the Course Director for MCh Surgery in November 2023.

Within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care, I am a member of the Faculty Research and Enterprise Committee. I am currently working alongside other Faculty colleagues in the Academic Misconduct Working Group to update the university's Student Academic Integrity Policy.

I am the Lead for the Evidence Based Decision Making in Surgery module and the Research Dissemination module within the MCh Surgery.

I am also the Lead for the Foundation in Clinical Medicine module, the Research Methods and Evidence Based Medicine in Healthcare module, and the Dissertation module within the Physician Associate studies MSc.

I am a member of the Physician Associate Schools Council (PASC) research sub-committee.  I am also a regular OSCE examiner for the Physician Associate National Examination and the Kent and Medway Medical School.
