Dr Rachel Terry

Associate and Admissions Director and Academic Sessional

School of Psychology and Life Sciences

I am The Admissions Director on the Doctoral Training Programme in Clinical Psychology, run by the Salomons Institute for Applied Psychology.

I joined the staff team of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2014 as a Clinical and Academic Tutor and became the Admissions Director (leading on the selection of new trainees) in 2021.

I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 2006, and subsequently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in CBT for psychosis in 2009.

I am registered as a clinical psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and I am a member of the Division of Clinical Psychology and wider British Psychological Society.

Prior to taking up the post at Canterbury Christ Church University, I worked as a clinical psychologist in forensic mental health settings and acute inpatient wards in the NHS.

My current job role as Admissions Director on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology includes leading on the selection of our new cohorts of trainee clinical psychologists, teaching, supervision of trainees’ doctoral research and supporting trainees 1:1 as they progress through the course.

We are currently working hard to increase access to clinical psychology training for under-represented groups in the profession.

My academic interests include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Offender Mental Health and Rehabilitation, Psychosis and Professional Boundaries.

I have completed additional training in teaching in Higher Education, and I am now an Associate Fellow with the HEA (Higher Education Academy).

I currently organize the ‘Adult Mental Health’ teaching in the first year of the 3-year training course, and a ‘welcome day’ for new trainees before they start the course.

In terms of examining, my role involves the examination of trainees’ Major Research Projects and other assignments including ‘The Assessment of Clinical Skills’ which trainees complete in their first year of training.

I also act as an examiner on the Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at the Salomons Institute.

My research interests include Professional boundaries in clinical practice, forensic mental health, psychosis and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

I am involved in the supervision of clinical psychology trainees' Major Research Projects (MRPs) and I am currently supervising projects in the area of forensic mental health and professional boundaries.

I am an External Examiner on the Clinical Psychology Training Course at the University of East Anglia.
