Dr Paul Lockwood

Reader & Research Supervisor

School of Allied and Public Health Professions

Dr Paul Lockwood is a Reader (Principal Lecturer) in Diagnostic Radiography, and Chair of the FMHSC Research Ethics Panel.

I currently am a Reader (Principal Lecturer) of Diagnostic Radiography, Chair of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care Research Ethics Panel, Hub Lead for Clinical & Medical Sciences Research Hub, and PACs (IQ Web) lead for the Faculty. Previously, I have been the interim Course Director for PgC Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, and Course Director for several years for MSc Medical Imaging (Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Interventional Fluoroscopy) and BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography, PgC CT Head Reporting, PgC CT Sinus & Facial Bones Reporting, as well as Deputy Exam Board Chair.

I currently teach on the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography
  • MSc Clinical Reporting
  • MSc by Research (Graduate School supervisor)
  • MSc Healthcare Practice (Research Modules)
  • MSc Nursing (Research Module)
  • Foundation Degree (Radiography)

I use Behaviourist theory to evaluate students' progress in learning new clinical skills in complex medical image (X-ray, CT, US, NM, MRI) interpretation. I use Cognitive theory to examine the reasoning and critical review of their analytical judgement and reasoning of diagnosis and Constructivist theory to reflect upon how students develop and evolve their thinking from theory-based learning and instructed medical imaging assessment to develop autonomous practice.

I teach the principles and practice of evaluating the evidence basis for radiography practice, starting from data searching, synthesis, and analysis to critiquing contemporary research. I supervise student BSc and MSc research projects of literature reviews, student and workforce surveys, and radiation dose experiments. Utilising a mixture of Asynchronous online, Synchronous on-campus teaching and tutorials, and independent learning.

Research interests & Supervison

Do you want to do a research degree? Are you interested in Diagnostic Radiography and Medicine, Health and Social Care or related topics? Then I would be pleased to hear from you.

As an active independent researcher status, I have received multiple successful research grant bids over the course of my career at CCCU. These grants have been essential in developing my skills and experience as an individual principal investigator and a contributor within a wider project team to make significant contributions to the field of diagnostic radiographer reporting within the UK healthcare sector and as a leader in advanced radiography practice internationally.

Research Projects

  • Investigating the correlation and potential causality between cervical spine pathology and oesophageal dysmotility with a view to improving care.. Researcher(s): Mrs Kealey O'Hanlon. Supervisor(s): Dr Paul Lockwood, Professor Eleni Hatzidimitriadou. [Postgraduate Research Project]

Through extensive wider engagement with academics, clinical and medical staff and professional bodies at a local, national and global level, I have been invited to sit on international advisory panels, peer review for multiple international radiography professional body journals, and hold external examiner positions at UK and International universities.
