I am a Principal Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, where I lead, lecture, and advise on Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) and Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP). I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
With a strong clinical background, I have extensive experience as an Acute Medicine Nurse Consultant and senior leader within an Emergency and Acute Care Group/Division. I remain active as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner at a local NHS Trust.
I have worked on several projects for Health Education England (HEE) and was seconded during the COVID pandemic to focus on various Advanced Clinical Practice workstreams related to workforce development. I currently chair the Royal College of Physicians’ ACP workstream for HEE. Previously, I chaired the Royal College of Nursing’s Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) Forum and served on the organisation’s credentialing workstream.
As an expert advisor for the National Institute for Health Care Excellence (NICE) and the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), I contributed to the development of the NICE guidelines for Emergency and Acute Medical Care in those over 16 (NG94) in 2018. I am passionate about advancing both Independent Prescribing and the governance surrounding Advanced Practice, focusing on role development and scope of practice.
I am a seasoned systems leader with a keen interest in the whole systems approach to acute and emergency care. I advocate for clinical leadership that fosters safe and effective, person-centered pathways across the healthcare system.
Recognised nationally as a subject matter expert in advanced practice, I have spoken at numerous international and national events and have authored and edited textbooks and chapters on advanced practice, prescribing, and emergency care.
In addition to my role at the university, I hold an honorary Associate Professorship at several other institutions, contributing to advanced and consultant-level practice within the broader healthcare system. I also review for various journals, including the International Journal of Advancing Practice.
Beyond my clinical and academic pursuits, I am an ordained priest in the Church of England, serving within the Rochester Diocese.
