Mrs Nicki Mcrae

Lecturer in Physiotherapy

School of Allied and Public Health Professions

Nicki is a Lecturer in Physiotherapy and also the Physiotherapy Placement Lead within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care.

I am a Lecturer in Physiotherapy and the Placement Lead for the course, with my background mainly in respiratory Physiotherapy. Having completed numerous rotations within the NHS early in my career, I gained experience across a range of services and specialisms, leading me to find my enthusiasm for acute Physiotherapy, particularly within respiratory, surgical and vascular. I eventually specialised in Critical Care, becoming the Team Lead Physio for Critical Care, Surgery and Vascular. After leading my team during the pandemic, I chose to do various non-clinical roles to gain knowledge of the wider healthcare system. My roles included a secondment as a Student Placement Expansion Facilitator, where I developed alternative and innovative placements alongside the HEE project to assist with the demand. I then worked for the CSP for a year as the South-East Professional Advisor, providing members with professional support alongside assisting in the revamping of the Physiotherapy career framework project. My varied roles in both clinical and non-clinical sectors allowed me to gain broader knowledge and experience across the region, liaising with and building relationships with a multitude of stakeholders, giving me strong foundations as Placement Lead.

I have completed numerous teachings throughout my career, both clinical and non-clinical, to team members, MDT, students, external stakeholders and members of the public, where I discovered teaching is where my passion lies.  Additionally, having presented at various conferences, this also cemented my passion for engaging with others and sharing knowledge and experience. I taught for a few years on a management programme at masters levels credits which I thoroughly enjoyed.  I then became a temporary lecturer to CCCU in early 2023 which led me to becoming a full time Lecturer here since September 2023 on the Physiotherapy course.
