Dr Mark Gradwell

Principal Lecturer/School Director of Enterprise, Engagement & Employability

School of Allied and Public Health Professions

Mark is the School Director of Enterprise, Engagement and Employability Healthcare (NHS) and a Senior Lecturer.

I am an HCPC registered Diagnostic Radiographer, with over 30 years post qualification experience in clinical service delivery and higher education. In addition to my Diploma of the College of Radiographers, I also have a BSc in Radiography with Diagnostic Practice from Kingston University, an MSc in Nuclear Medicine, a Masters in Public Administration both from London South Bank University and a Doctorate in Education from Canterbury Christ Church University. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, and I have been awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Prior to joining Canterbury Christ Church University, I was a Principal Lecturer for Recruitment in the Faculty of Health and Social Care and Professional Lead for Diagnostic Radiography, at London South Bank University. Before taking up that post, I was a Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography, initially at University of Hertfordshire and then at London South Bank University. I have worked as a Clinical Radiographer at Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, and Mayday Hospital, Croydon (now known as Croydon University Hospital).

I am a link tutor for radiography students on placement at Conquest Hospital, Hastings and Eastbourne District General Hospital.

As School Director for Enterprise, Engagement and Employability, my role is to build and sustain effective relationships with our NHS partners to ensure that we work together to deliver the right Allied Health Professional workforce for the future. I am also the School Lead for Apprenticeships.

I teach on a number of modules within the BSc Diagnostic Imaging programme. My specific subject areas of expertise within imaging are management and leadership, physics, radiation science, paediatric imaging and nuclear medicine.

I also teach on the Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology module as part of the BSc (Hons) Foundation Year in Health and Wellbeing.

I am a member of the Society and College of Radiographers and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

I am a Technical Assessor of the Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) for The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), and have contributed to two assessments to date, assessing diagnostic imaging service providers against the QSI standards.

My thesis as part of my Doctorate in Education was entitled ‘An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis of Interprofessional Education; an Investigation of the Experiences of Pre-registration Healthcare Students.’ I am particularly interested in understanding how individuals experience phenomena.

In 2018, I was part of a team of radiography educators who developed a training manual in Values-based Practice (VBP) in Diagnostic & Therapeutic Radiography. The manual was published in collaboration with the College of Radiographers and the Collaborating Centre for Values-based Practice in Health and Social Care, St Catherine’s College, Oxford University. The purpose of this work was to educate radiographers in the application of VBP, so that they can engage in shared evidence-based decision-making with their patients, using dialogue about values.
