Miss Marissa Dainton

Senior Lecturer

School of Nursing

Marissa is a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing with a clinical background in renal care.

I completed my Registered Nurse (Adult) diploma with the University of Brighton in 1996, subsequently achieving a BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice, also from Brighton. I completed my MSc in Interprofessional Healthcare with CCCU in 2011. In 2018, I completed my PGCAP with CCCU and now have Senior Fellowship with AdvanceHE (SFHEA). I also hold an honours degree in Geography and Economics and a PGCE, both from Swansea University. I am currently the Course Director for the MSc Integrated Health and Social Care (2026 Validation) and Deputy Course Director for the BSc/MSc Healthcare Practice. My main area of research is trans and non-binary inclusion in pre-registration nursing education, and I am currently undertaking my PhD in this field as well as developing a social justice module for the planned new nursing and midwifery pre-registration courses. I also continue to take an active interest in renal nursing and write regularly on the subject.

I teach on a range of Adult Nursing and related courses. For the BSc course, I am on the team for the Nursing and Social Justice module. For the MSc Healthcare Practice I am the Module Leader for the Assessment and Management of the Deteriorating Person module. Across a range of courses, I help to deliver the renal elements of their clinical science teaching. I also act as a supervisor for MSc Dissertation students within the faculty.

I am currently conducting a PhD in the inclusion of trans and non-binary care needs within adult nursing courses and have published recently on this subject. I am also involved in research into LGBT university staff experiences of the covid-19 pandemic. I have published and presented on shared care within haemodialysis, vascular access and also on infection control within the renal unit. I am also a peer reviewer for the British Journal of Nursing and the Journal of Kidney Care.

I served for four years on the inaugural board of the Association of Nephrology Nurses (ANNuk), work which included setting up the National Renal Nursing Course. I have contributed a chapter on acute kidney injury (AKI) to the sixth edition of the Renal Nursing Textbook, which I am currently updating for the sixth edition. I have acted as an external examiner both for London South Bank University and for Nottingham Trent University.
