Ms Kate Devis

Senior Lecturer

School of Nursing

Kate is a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing, and has been the Course Director for the Return to Practice course since 2020.

Since September 2020, I have been the Course Director for CCCU's Return to Practice course for nurses. I also contribute to other courses within the school, including personal tutor on the pre registration BSc Adult Nursing course.

Historically, I completed a pre-registration Nursing Degree in Bristol, and following this held various clinical posts in acute settings mainly within the specialities of neurosurgery, and ENT, which included working in New Zealand for a year. I came to Canterbury Christ Church as a Senior Lecturer in 2012, having previously worked in education for 9 years at two other Universities - as a Lecturer Practitioner in Brighton, and as Senior Lecturer at a University in the north of Malawi. During this time, I also completed a PGCE in Health and Social Care Education and two Masters degrees, the most recent of which was an MA in Anthropology. I am a registered Adult Nurse and Nurse tutor with the NMC.

As well as being a Course Director, I teach both on pre-registration and CPD programmes, and currently I am a personal academic tutor for students on our new pre-registration Nursing Masters degree which is a role I enjoy. I am module leader for the Year 1 Practice Learning module for pre-registration BSc Adult Nursing students - practice is clearly central to Nursing Practice and essential to establish good foundations from the first year onwards . I am also interested in the application of anthropology to health, both broadly in relation to internationalisation, and more locally for example through completing a research project around homelessness and health.

In 2016/2017, I was involved in two team research projects with colleagues from the School of Nursing, both of which have been written up and published in 2017. These focused on the lived experiences of service users who participate in interviews for potential student nurses, and first year student nurses perceptions of social media. In addition I have completed a small research project around the experiences of first year student nurses who have been referred on academic assignments; this paper was presented at a national conference in 2017.
