Dr Katarina Ozcakir Mozova

Katarina’s research interests lie in the areas of forensic psychology vulnerability and evidence based practice.

Katarina Mozova finished her BSc at Canterbury Christ Church University in Psychology with Applied Criminology and later continued enriching her knowledge within the area by pursuing MSc in Forensic Psychology at the University of Kent where she graduated in 2011.

She worked with Professor Theresa Gannon exploring and assessing needs of firesetters. She also worked with Prof. Jane Wood exploring characteristics of incarcerated and street gang members. She has assisted in a pilot intervention program targeted at firesetters in prisons. She completed her PhD examining the group processes behind street gang membership. Since 2015, she is a lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University in Policing, leading on research surrounding vulnerability in the Criminal Justice System and teaching across a variety of degrees. She is Deputy Director of the Justice Support Dogs International lab and in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Spruin (department of Psychology) she is researching the impact of specially trained dogs as a form of witness support.  

I am the module leader for several modules across different programmes. Currently, I am the module lead for: The Criminal Justice System and How To Tell What Works (L4), Wicked Problems in Policing (L5), Young People and the Youth Justice System (L5), Research Informed policing (L6), Evidence Based Policing and Research Methods (L6), Gangs and Serious Youth Offending (L6). I also teach on postgraduate degree programmes. My specific teaching interests lie in the area of Youth Justice, Vulnerability and Professional Policing. 

Currently, Katarina’s main areas of interest are in street gang membership, witness experiences in the CJS, youth justice (e.g. CSE) and evidence based police practice.  She has also been involved in research surrounding the personal officer scheme in the HM Prison Service, male and female firesetting, and mental health and gang membership. Katarina has successfuly won internal funding bids relating to a variety of projects. She is also a member of project teams on research which gained external funding. Katarina has presented her research in applied and academic setting, as BPS Division of Forensic Psychology conference, College of Policing Research Showcase, Scotland Yard, Kent Police Leadership Day, and more. Katarina supervises both MSc and PhD students relating to topics of police professionalisations nationally and internationally, as well as vulnerability, and more.

Achievements

  • Won a 50th Anniversary PhD Scholarship at the University of Kent.
