Dr Katarina Ozcakir Mozova

Katarina’s research interests lie in the areas of forensic psychology vulnerability and evidence based practice.

I finished my BSc at Canterbury Christ Church University in Psychology with Applied Criminology and later continued enriching my knowledge within the area by pursuing MSc in Forensic Psychology at the University of Kent where I graduated in 2011. I completed my PhD examining the group processes (push and pull factors) behind street gang membership. In 2015, I came back to Canterbury Christ Church University where I am now a Senior Lecturer in Policing. I am the course director for BSc Counter terrorism and transnational crime/ Countering terrorism and extremism; MSc Policing (in partnership with the Dutch Police Academy); and MSc Policing and Security transformation for professionals in the relevant industries. I also support our ambition in CPD developments across policing and security through postgraduate and short course opportunities.

I am an active researcher. I previously worked on a large scale project exploring and assessing needs of firesetters. I also assisted in a pilot intervention program targeted at firesetters in prisons. Later, I worked on projects relating to exploring characteristics and mental health needs of incarcerated street gang members. I have further researched areas surrounding CSE, supporting vulnerable individuals in their criminal justice journey through the use of specially trained facility dogs, gang homicide, and others.

I am the module leader for several modules across different courses. Currently, I am the module lead for: Evidence Based Policing and Research Methods (L5), Gangs and Serious Youth Offending (L6), Data and Research management (L7) and Applied Research Project (L7). My specific teaching interests lie in the area of Youth Justice, Vulnerability and Evidence Based Practice

Currently, my main areas of interest are in street gang membership, witness experiences in the CJS, youth justice (e.g. CSE) and evidence based police practice. I was previously involved in research surrounding the personal officer scheme in the HM Prison Service, male and female firesetting, and mental health and gang membership. I have successfully won internal funding bids relating to a variety of projects. She is also a member of project teams on research which gained external funding. I have presented my research in applied and academic setting, as BPS Division of Forensic Psychology conference, College of Policing Research Showcase, Scotland Yard, Kent Police Leadership Day, and more. I supervise both MSc and PhD students. I review journal articles on a regular basis, as well as book proposals.
