Ms Karen Shaw

Lecturer Adult Nursing

School of Nursing

Karen is a Lecturer in Adult Nursing within the School of Nursing.

I completed my Registered Nurse (Adult) diploma at Buckinghamshire New University in 1998, I then went onto gain my BSc (Hons) In Nursing, also at Buckinghamshire New University. Since qualifying, I have worked across a range of clinical settings, primarily within Acute care settings. This consisted of working on acute medical wards, neurology and a cardiac unit, before focusing within the specialist area of Intensive care. I did my intensive Care Course at Greenwich University in 2008. I was a sister in intensive care from 2008 to 2020. I worked throughout the Covid Pandemic and received The National Recognition Award, for my work within intensive care during that time. Throughout my nursing practice I also spent time balancing work in acute care, and a community setting. I worked within the community and gained my BSc (Hons) in Community Health Nursing : Specialist Nursing Programme. I obtained my Community Health Nursing Degree and qualified as a Health Visitor in 2000. Within my health visiting role, I worked on many health promotion projects including setting up smoking cessation clinics and health and development clinics which focused on children and family’s health.

I have been an Adult Nurse Lecturer since October 2022 at Canterbury Christ Church University. I was awarded my Associate Fellowship in 2024, and will be working towards my MSc In Education. I teach on a range of Adult Nursing and related courses. I also teach on RDNA and post registration courses. I will be the Module lead for Transforming Health Care Provision from September 2024.

Education has also been at the heart of my clinical practice. Within my time at intensive care I was allocated a shift once a week to teach nurses at the bedside, and assist in staff development. I really enjoyed this and pursued this further with a practice development role across three hospital sites, to teach clinical skills. It seemed like the natural progression to teach student nurses at university.  I teach on a range of adult nursing and related courses. I also teach on RDNA and post registration courses. I will be the Module Lead for Transforming Health Care Provision from September 2024.
