Course Director for BA (Hons) Digital Media Senior Lecturer in Animation and Digital Media Practice

Joanna is course director on the BA (Hons) Digital Media course. She is a senior lecturer, primarily teaching practical skills in 3D animation, motion graphics and augmented reality. 

Joanna has been teaching at Canterbury Christ Church university since 2008 on the Digital Media course. She has a Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice and is a fellow of the HEA. Her teaching career began as a sessional lecturer whilst working as an animator and creative professional at Pixel Circus studio. She has also led and taught modules as a sessional lecturer at the University of Kent in animation and visual effects. Joanna became a full time member of the Digital Media course team in 2015. Leading and teaching modules in the following areas: 3D animation, Augmented Reality, Digital Imaging, Motion Graphics and 2D animation. Joanna also leads on a number of level 6 modules supervising students in their individual practical projects. She is also a supervisor for Masters students.

Joanna is currently working on a practice based PhD researching the roles of animation and augmented reality in exploring evolving identities associated with a breast cancer diagnosis. In May 2023, Joanna held an interactive exhibition across two galleries in Kent, showcasing a number of augmented reality, animation and digital art pieces based on her research topic.

A previous research project investigated whether an augmented reality trail was an effective tool to engage students with learning. The trail across the CCCU Canterbury campus helped students and staff engage with a range of sustainability topics. The findings were disseminated at the HEA Advance HE Teaching & Learning Conference 2018.

Joanna was co-organiser of Canterbury Anifest, an animation festival for five years.
