Ms Jo Kelly

Subject Lead - Adult Nursing

School of Nursing

Jo is a Senior Lecturer and route lead for the Community and Primary Care Route as part of the existing MSc Healthcare Practice Course.

During my time at CCCU, I have held a variety of roles including line management, strategic leadership within the school, Course Director for the Adult Nursing BSc undergraduate pre-registration programme and undertaken module, practice, and cohort leadership both in pre-registration and post graduate courses. This has included the personal tutor role and supporting roles underpinning programme delivery and teaching on both pre-registration undergraduate and post graduate courses.   Additionally, I have had significant involvement with curriculum development and reapproval events. My specialist interest is District and community Nursing and supporting people with long term conditions with a focus on individualised and person-centred care. Most recently in 2022, I have developed in collaboration with external stakeholders and validated a L7 Masters route for community and primary care and recently undertaken a subject lead role for Adult Nursing.

I have taught several modules on the undergraduate level:

  • Social and Developmental Psychology
  • Brain, Mind and Behaviour
  • Graduate Attributes in Psychology and Research Methods.

I also convene level 5 module: Graduate Attributes for Work.

I teach both pre and post registration programmes for Adult Nursing with a specific interest in community and primary care, working with people with long term conditions including involvement of experts by experience.

I am keen to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing as part of whole person centred care within adult nursing and promote the ability to enable caring conversations to happen with people experiencing emotional distress (with or without a mental health diagnosis)

I am also a PhD student exploring the intersection of social class and motherhood.

I have published work in relation to mentorship and both promoting and developing the link mentorship role for practitioners and partnership working between health education institutes and practice. I also have published in conjunction with three other colleagues a very practical book aimed at pre-registration nurses working within the community settings. Additionally in collaboration with a colleague and external partner organisation, we undertook research related to the integration of a mental health focused module for the Adult Nursing pre-registration programme and subsequently presented this at the RCN education conference. The new module became part of our newly validated BSc Adult Nursing pre-registration programme in 2017. I currently am undertaking doctorate studies as part of an EdD.

I am currently an external examiner for other Higher Education Institutes for post graduate studies.
