Professor Janet Melville-Wiseman

DipSW, CQSW, CertPsych, MSc, PhD. Janet is a Principal Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University.

I have many years of experience as a social work practitioner, manager and academic.  I undertook my PhD in Mental Health at the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent and also worked there as a lecturer and researcher with the Personal Social Services Research Unit.  I have worked at CCCU since 2005 as Course Director for the MASW, Professional Lead, Faculty Director of Research Ethics and Governance and Faculty Director of PhD Studies.

Gender, mental health, mental health law, safeguarding in mental health services, professional boundaries, ethics and values for professional practice.

My research interests focus on personal and professional boundaries; gender, mental health and relational risk and need; regulation of care; and practitioner transferable skills for social work research. I am particularly interested in the role and usefulness of case study as a method in social worker search. I convene the Extended Research Module for the MA in Social Work and have a small group of research supervisees. I also supervise PhD and EdD students.

We also run the largest annual social work education and research conference in the UK and are represented on International Fora through the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and the European Association of Schools of Social Work (EASSW). https://www.kingston.ac.uk/events/item/4227/26-jun-2024-joint-universities-social-work-association-conference-2024/
