James Cane is a chartered psychologist and Principal Lecturer in psychology.

James Cane is a Chartered Psychologist, Principal Lecturer and Faculty research methods and analysis support lead. He currently provides support for initiatives for methodological approaches, providing critical guidance on research grants and scholarly outputs.

Well-versed in using statistical tools and research design, he has led workshops on R and RStudio, SPSS, JASP, JAMOVI, and Reference Managers, as well as on crafting peer-reviewed research articles. He has published in health psychology, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and social cognition and his work has contributed to understanding health behaviour change, cognitive processes in substance use, eye movements and attention processes, and social cognitive dynamics.

Previously serving as the Director of Psychology, Dr Cane oversaw all psychology-related research, knowledge exchange, and teaching strategies at the Psychology Section at CCCU. In his teaching roles as Principal Lecturer and Senior Lecturer, he has designed and delivered modules in advanced research methods and statistics, health psychology, and cognitive psychology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He supervises work across PhD, MSc and undergraduate programmes.

Dr Cane was awarded his PhD in Psychology in 2010 and held postdoctoral positions at University College London and the University of Kent, before joining LSBU as a Lecturer in Psychology in 2015. In 2017, he joined Canterbury Christ Church University as a Senior Lecturer where he initially took on the role of Undergraduate Programme Director before being appointed to Section Director and Principal Lecturer in November 2019. He took on his new role as Faculty research methods and analysis support lead at the end of 2022.

Dr Cane is a chartered member of the British Psychological Society (CPsychol.), a member of the British Psychological Society's Division of Health Psychology, a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society (FPsyS), and a member of the Experimental Psychology Society. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Dr Cane has led on, and designed, Cognitive and Biological Psychology, Health Psychology, and Research Methods and Statistics modules across undergraduate and postgraduate (MSc) courses.

James actively supervises across undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes and provides training for postgraduate students and staff in research methods and statistics.

Dr Cane is an active member of the Experimental Psychology Society and has attracted funding as a principal in investigator on funding grants from funders such as the Experimental Psychology Society and British Academy / Leverhulme.
