Dr Emma Graves

Dr Emma Kaylee Graves is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications, teaching across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules.

As a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications, Emma teaches across the BA (Hons) Media and Communications, BA (Hons) Public Relations and Media and MA Media, Communications and Public Relations, with experience teaching on the Foundation Year programme as well.

She mostly teaches modules on media production, public relations and professional development, including a work placement module for final year students. Many of her modules include live briefs and guest speakers, preparing students for working in the industry.

Alongside teaching and research, Emma has several responsibilities, such as being a year lead, carrying out school engagement activities, curriculum development, conference organisation and organising the end of year showcase for BA (Hons) Media and Communications and BA (Hons) Public Relations and Media.

Emma started teaching at CCCU in 2018 during her PhD scholarship. She continued to teach as a sessional lecturer upon completing her PhD and later became a contracted member of staff. Emma has FHEA status as a result of completing the PGCAP.

Emma's general research interests include media discourse, commercialisation, technology and online communities. Specialising in media coverage of technology, her forthcoming monograph, Covering Extended Reality Technologies in the Media, examines the interplay between the news and marketing of virtual, augmented and mixed reality products.

She has also been part of multiple research projects with colleagues across the University. As well as traditional research, this has included a community engagement project with Dr Ruth Sanz Sabido that involved memory workshops with residents of Deal, culminating in an exhibition in Deal Museum in October 2022.

Emma's current project focuses on greenwashing and big tech companies. She is also working with Dr Mujde Bideci on a study comparing the media coverage and consumer experience of extended reality.

Emma has been deeply involved with the Hi3 Network, working with local SMEs such as Electric Medway and Abstract Source to develop their product ideas. She has also built up industry links for guest speakers, live briefs and work placements.
