Emilia Bertolo

Dr Emilia Bertolo

I joined CCCU in 2004, and I am now Principal Lecturer in Chemistry. I am also a STEM Ambassador.

I am a Principal Lecturer in Chemistry, teaching modules with a chemistry content across a range of Biological and Chemical Science programmes.

I am interested in enhancing the student learning experience of chemistry and the integration of research in the undergraduate curriculum. I have published articles and two book chapters on these subjects and given guest lectures at international conferences.

I am also passionate about engaging children (specifically primary school aged) with science and chemistry, and I have recorded several videos with kitchen chemistry experiments which can be performed at home.

Teaching Responsibilities: modules which have a chemistry or environmental component, such Chemistry, Advancing Chemistry, Chemistry for the Life Sciences and Aspects of Pollution

Educational research interests:

Using technology to enhance the student learning experience of science

Enhancing the teaching-research nexus in the undergraduate curriculum: undergraduate students as producers of research and scholarship

Developing innovative assessment strategies to enhance the student learning experience: “assessment for learning” and “assessment as learning”.

My research spans a wide range of fields, from fluorescence chemise dies to functionalised nanoparticles for diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and I actively publish my research in scientific journals.
