Senior Lecturer

School of Nursing

Daniel is a Senior Lecturer in Learning Disabilities.

I am a registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD) and Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, with extensive experience in various healthcare settings since qualifying in 1998. I am an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Approved Trainer, delivering education mapped to the Core Capabilities Frameworks. Demonstrating significant system leadership, I lead interagency projects with the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and have a background as a Consultant Practitioner. I am committed to improving services for people with learning disabilities and autistic people, and I support professional development through coaching and mentorship.

As an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Approved Trainer (Tier 1 & 2), I actively deliver teaching and learning activities that are meticulously mapped to the Core Capabilities Frameworks for Learning Disability and Autism. This crucial work ensures that a diverse cohort of students across various Level 6 and 7 Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB) accredited courses develop the essential knowledge and skills to provide high-quality, person-centred care for individuals with learning disabilities and autistic people, aligning with national standards and best practice.

My research interests are firmly rooted in enhancing the well-being and inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities. My work spans various areas, including evaluating the impact of training initiatives like the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, exploring the experiences of marginalised groups such as transgender individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism, and promoting the development of the learning disability workforce. A significant focus of my research involves employing participatory methodologies and investigating the role of practice development to improve healthcare services and reduce health inequities for people with learning disabilities. This is demonstrated through my involvement in evaluating interventions and contributing to collaborative research efforts, such as the Global Intellectual Disability Nurse Research Collaboratory.

Research Projects

  • Pilot evaluation of the ‘be a leader’ leadership training for people with learning disabilities. Researcher(s): Mr Daniel Marsden. [Project]

Beyond my academic role, I demonstrate significant system leadership through leading interagency projects with the Integrated Care Board (ICB), driving improvements in services for people with learning disabilities and autistic people across the region. This strategic influence is complemented by his extensive experience as a Consultant Practitioner, where I have provided expert guidance and shaped service delivery within both NHS and independent settings, demonstrated by initiatives like the Kent Surrey Sussex Learning Disability Community of Practice, fostering inclusion and strengthening support networks. My dedication to professional development is also expressed through coaching and mentorship, contributing to the growth and expertise of senior practitioners, academics and support staff.
