Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing

School of Nursing

Ciaran is a Registered Adult Nurse with an interest in critical care, research and widening participation.

I registered as a nurse in 1996 and completed a BSc Hons in Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2000 and an MA in Education in 2023, focusing on widening participation and student experience. I have over 20 years of critical care nursing experience, having worked as a bedside nurse, sister and clinical nurse educator. I also have an interest in delirium. As a clinical nurse educator, I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and became a fellow of the HEA. In 2018, I joined the Research and Development team at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, working as a Research Nurse with a critical care focus.  I joined Canterbury Christ Church University as a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing in August 2020. I am Course Director for the Registered Nurse Degree Apprentice (RNDA) course and the module lead for Reviewing and Analysing Practice.

As Nurse Educator, as well as teaching clinical skills to new and experienced critical care staff, I was involved in teaching the Foundations of Intensive Care course for staff new to intensive care practice. This was a level 6 module affiliated to Greenwich University. Having completed the PG cert in HE, I did some sessional lecturing on the Intensive Care Course at Greenwich University, before joining Canterbury Christ Church University full time as a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing.

For my Masters dissertation I carried out a qualitative research study exploring the experience of the Registered Nurse Degree Apprentice students and the different learning environments that they are exposed to; placement, the work place and university, through the lens of the hidden curriculum.
