Getting started

Starting university can be daunting but fret not, as this is normal. We understand that you have made a big step towards your future goals by investing time, money, and energy to this degree.

Right from your first year at Christ Church Business School, you will start to develop your knowledge and skills in Accounting and involve in your course's specialist projects. The year is divided into two semesters, and you will study three modules per semester. If you are studying Accounting as a single honours course then your first year modules will be:

  • Introduction to Financial Accounting
  • Introduction to Management Accounting
  • Economics
  • Business Information and Analysis
  • Personal and Academic Skills for Success
  • Managing People in Organisations

Students also have the option to study a Contemporary Language Studies module instead of Managing People in Organisations in Semester 2 if they wish.

If you are studying Accounting in combination with another subject then you will study three modules from the above list and then three modules from the other subject area in your first year. The Accounting modules you will complete will depend on the combination you are studying. If you would like further information regarding the modules you will take as a combined honours student please contact aef@canterbury.ac.uk.

As you enter your second year, you will develop confidence and start to specialise in/practise your core course contents. Below are the modules you will take in your second year:

  • International Financial Reporting
  • Management Accounting
  • Project Management
  • Employability Skills
  • Corporate and Business Law
  • Management and Leadership

You will have the opportunity to join other students on the course for a field trip to places like the City of London.

In your final year, you will hone the skills you have developed and choose a topic for specialisation, for example, Audit and Assurance.

The students in the Accounting course (single or combined honours) are of all ages, all backgrounds and from many places around the world. This makes us a rich, diverse, inclusive, tolerant, and lively community.

Our campus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and we are for it. The site has wonderfully maintained open spaces and gardens to stroll in and meet with friends. It is situated in the heart of the city, and everything you need for a convenient student life is within very close walking distance.

On the social side, the Student Union has a vast range of clubs, societies, and a student-run bar called The Lounge Bar – all of which have unique social calendars and offer endless opportunities to make lifelong friends and discover new hobbies. Furthermore, you can always create your society and cultivate your community!
