Read why Harry loves studying Physical Education, Sport & Exercise Science at CCCU.

1. The variety of research topics

One great aspect of PESES is the endless number of opportunities you can choose when deciding on a dissertation research project. The course provides a broad range of module choices, allowing us to design very hands-on and practical research.

I’m currently carrying out a research project on physiological responses to isometric exercise to find new treatments for high blood pressure. As a CCCU student, I have access to high-end laboratory equipment for me to undertake my research, and staff support if I need it.

Other research topics can include sport science with performance or psychology, or you can choose a physical education topic and make use of the great sport facilities around campus.

2. The support for CCCU students

CCCU provides fantastic student support services ranging from financial, mental health, and academic support.

Within PESES (Physical Education and Sport & Exercise Science), the staff across the department are incredibly kind, caring, and supportive. They’re always contactable and happy to chat about any issues you might be having.

It’s clear from day one of the course that the lecturers are passionate about their field and want to see each student succeed in their studies and chosen career path.

Throughout my time as a student, I’ve had a course specific Personal Academic Tutor (PAT). Every student has a PAT who they can contact if they need support in any way. My PAT has always been helpful and understanding throughout, so whenever there has been an issue, I’ve had a solid support system already in place.

3. The emphasis on real-world skills and industry-leading research

The PESES course at CCCU is designed to set students up with a range of academic knowledge and real-world practical skills, which provides a range of options for careers upon graduation.

On the physical education side of the course, there are plenty of opportunities to learn from experienced teachers and other students from a range of sports. There’s also a chance to complete placements in a PE or sport industry that’s relevant to your personal goals, giving you the chance to practice the knowledge and skills gained during lectures and seminars.

On the sport science side of the course, all students get the chance to use specialist scientific equipment. This enables us to acquire the skills needed for industry.

All the staff within the sports department are still actively working and researching in their relevant industry. We learn from experts who are still operating within the industry on both the physical education and sport exercise science sides of the course.

Having access to current literature written by your own lecturers is inspiring to students who find interest within those fields. For my dissertation, I have decided to follow in the footsteps of my lecturers, who are leading researchers in the exercise and health field. This has enabled me to work directly on their research, which is such a great opportunity.

4. The residential trips and hands-on experience

Over my degree, there have been opportunities each year to partake in residential trips. One of these was a module trip to North Wales to experience a full week of ‘Outdoor Adventurous Activity’ including caving, abseiling, and rock climbing to name just a few.

This was a great time to really connect with my classmates and lecturers, and it was fun to visit somewhere new and get out of the classroom.

The sports department also offers residential trips external to any module including many activities and social opportunities.

What’s more, all these opportunities are free on the course, making these trips available to all students as a part of their education at CCCU.
