Since joining CCCU, Daria has achieved and experienced an incredible amount. From visiting Tenerife to pitching her ideas in industry, she's certainly not shied away from a challenge.

Read why Daria loves studying Events Management at CCCU.

1. Taking advantage of so many opportunities

Since joining CCCU there has been so many different things to get involved in, such as a residential field trip to Tenerife in year 1, where we discovered the world of events in a different culture.

We visited the entire island and explored different events. I also became close friends with my classmates during this trip, which was great as we were all quite nervous during our first year.

I also had the opportunity to work for a conference organisation during the Work Based Learning module in year 2.

For this module, our team had to completely reimagine the organisation’s conference by giving them a pitch. I built a new template website for them to take inspiration from. Not only did I gain real work experience, but I learnt new skills, such as website design, and I gained more confidence with pitching my ideas to external companies.

Currently, I’m working with other students to put together a live event on our campus. We’re organising a festival that highlights the importance of sustainability, which is one of our core values at CCCU.

As part of this we’ve gone out and found our own suppliers, putting our learned skills into practice. This has given us the opportunity to make contacts with local businesses, which could lead to a job or partnership with them in the future.

2. Feeling supported throughout

My course isn't traditionally large. There are only about 20 of us, so this has made it easier for all my lecturers to build relationships with us all.

Here at CCCU I don't feel like I'm just another number. My lecturers are really friendly and approachable. We’re all on first name terms and there’s a mutual respect between us – it's not like the traditional teacher/student relationship in schools. It’s great because if I ever have any issues, I know I have the support from all the course staff.

3. Learning through different means of assessment

Our modules don’t consist of just classic theory, exams, reports, and essays. There’s a lot of practical work, which has helped me practise essential skills so I’m ready for the workplace.

For our residential field trip to Tenerife we did two assessed pieces of work that didn’t involve any essays! They were:

  • Designing an academic poster inspired by the posters we saw at the carnival
  • Doing two group presentations about what we saw during our trip.

This was great as I was able to gain confidence in my presentation skills, which set me up for my pitch in the Work Based Learning module in my second year.

4. Focussing on academic and professional skills

I really enjoyed the academic and professional skills module as it taught me all the necessary skills for university: writing essays, undertaking reports, conducting research, understanding different research methods etc.

I was worried that I wouldn’t know how to write a university-level assessment, but this module covered everything I needed to enable me to succeed throughout my degree.

5. Studying from different perspectives

Marketing, in particular, was a really exciting first year module. It was so interesting to see the power of effective promotion and reaching the right audience. Learning about branding, social media strategies, and creating campaigns was incredibly helpful and essential for Events Management.

Understanding social media marketing on a deeper level has helped as I’m managing the Instagram page for our sustainable live event, which has enabled me to implement the skills I’ve learned throughout the module.

It's amazing how marketing plays such a crucial role in making events successful and memorable, and it’s definitely a key skill to have in my career. I’m glad that the course covers different aspects of Events Management, which has opened up more possibilities for when I graduate.
