Following the national University and Colleges Union (UCU) strikes on 24, 25 and 30 November we are writing to confirm the next steps for those students who were affected by this action.

We are sorry that industrial action was called as part of an ongoing national dispute but recognise that the decision to vote to strike is not taken lightly and respect colleagues’ right to do so. We also respect the Christ Church Students’ Union vote outcome with students supporting the strike action. We remain committed to working with the local UCU on industrial relations issues and have put a range of measures in place to support our staff and students with the cost of living.

Our priority remains the education and wellbeing of our students, and we are committed to minimising any disruption to your learning.

Next steps if your teaching did not take place due to strike action

We are committed to minimizing the impact of the strike action on your learning and ensuring that you are still able to progress in your studies and succeed in your degree.

Your Course team will lead on plans to make up any cancelled learning activities through a range of flexible and timely approaches, to ensure that learning outcomes are met. Examples of approaches could include the provision of:

  • Relevant materials, online teaching, recorded lectures, support via tutorials or setting independent learning activities to make-up for cancelled lectures or other taught sessions.
  • Practice based learning activities using specialised facilities, equipment and processes where practical learning activities cannot be replicated unless face to face.
  • Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies’ (PSRB) learning activities where the professional requirements will not be met unless made up.

Your Course team will be in contact from this week with further details.

Incurred travel or childcare costs if all your timetabled teaching was cancelled without notice due to the strike

If you paid to travel to campus or childcare costs on a day of strike action, and all your timetabled teaching that day was cancelled with no prior warning, you will be able to submit a claim to be reimbursed for these costs. For details on how to make a claim please click here for FAQ on "Can I claim travel expenses or childcare costs? ".

Please note the deadline for the claim is 9 December and in order to be paid, you will need to ensure that we have your up to date bank account details in MyRecord under the "My Finance" tab.

We have created a Frequently Asked Questions webpage for students, which covers key information and guidance, and will be updated with the latest information.

If you have any concerns about your learning, please do not hesitate to talk to your Personal Academic Tutor or Course team. Our Student Wellbeing Team are also always on hand if you need support.
