Hear from Sam on how she secured a role by attending the Job Fair earlier in the year.

My name is Sam and I am a student studying at Christ Church and currently in my third year of Psychology and Sociology. I had health issues that meant I had to change my vocation as a carer so attended the job fair at the Food Court earlier this year to see what was on offer.

After speaking to Unitemps I signed up and was offered a temporary role in the Academic Admin of FAHE at the University. Things went so well that I have been offered a permanent role with the Academic Team and now have a permanent contract that fits with my studies!

  • Current role: Communication and Engagement Officer for Graduate Futures
  • Graduated in: BA (Hons) English Language and Communication

I have been at CCCU as a student or member of staff for seven years now. Throughout this time the campus has become a home away from home; not only the place where I continue to develop and grow to my fullest potential, but where I feel a sense of belonging to a community of likeminded individuals working to make positive change to people’s lives.

The university’s ethos of equality, diversity and equity are values I hold central in my life, and I wouldn’t be able to work in an institution that doesn’t do the same. The opportunities for training ensure that you continue  the journey you started on when applying to study here, you’ll never hit a dead end as there’s a wealth of knowledge and understanding waiting behind every corner of the storied walls. Above all else, it is the prospect of giving back to the institution which has given so much to me that makes me proud to work for CCCU.

  • Current role: Media Relations Officer
  • Graduated in: BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism

Studying at Canterbury Christ Church was fantastic as the course is run with a small cohort and gives students the opportunity to learn and develop in a practical and nurturing environment. Professional training and expertise from experienced and successful journalists and academics across broadcast, print and online and digital media, provides students with the skills they need to start a career in media and journalism.

My time at Christ Church was invaluable, especially with professional practice modules and industry work experience within the field. The course inspired and motivated me to start a career in journalism and to prepare for a career at the local newspaper and multimedia company KM Media Group/Kentish Gazette.

After spending four years as a journalist, I decided to change direction and find a different route in my career. Still wanting to use my interviewing, writing and communication skills, I branched out into PR and communications.

I have been in my role as Media Relations Officer since 2018 and not a day goes by where I don’t enjoy my job! I utilize my skills as a former journalist by working with academics, staff and students, across the University, highlighting and promoting the research and work in a variety of sectors and fields. This is just one area within my role and I enjoy the diversity and the fact that I’m always learning something new when creating news and content.

Canterbury Christ Church University is a friendly, inclusive, and exciting place to work and there are many development opportunities too. Christ Church has supported my professional development and funded my external diploma from CIPR in Strategic Crisis Communications which I recently completed. I am very grateful to work with such highly-skilled, creative and knowledgeable people across the institution.

  • Current role: International Development Manager (Global Mobility)
  • Graduated: BA (Hons) American Studies with Year in North America
  • Current: MA Modern History

After having such a transformative experience undertaking the Year in North America as part of my degree here at Canterbury Christ Church University, I knew that my aspirations and ambitions were deeply rooted within International Education. The staff within the School of Humanities helped hone my skills which later led to me taking a position as a Programme Administrator back in 2015, just months after graduating.

After making my way over to the International Partnerships and Development Office back in 2017, I have been given a wealth of opportunities to grow and shape my career, leading to my current position in which I manage our mobility offerings at an institutional level. My current role allows me to give opportunities to current and future students similar to those of my own which I feel was integral in getting me to where I am today. I work with great students, wonderful colleagues and friends, and am fortunate to have had CCCU as an employer for all these years.

"Canterbury Christ Church University has supported me right from my first day of studies, through to my graduate role and now within my current role as Content Producer within the department of Marketing and Communications. • Current role: Chief Technology Officer and Deputy Director, Information Technology
  • Graduated in: BSc (Hons) Information Technology & Business Studies

"When I started at the University in the autumn of 2002, I was a Web and Database administrator deploying the university’s first VLE, it was not my first job out of university having worked as a database consultant for a local company. My career at Christ Church has consisted of roles as a Systems Engineer, Web / Database Programmer, Team Leader, Manager, Head of Infrastructure in Information Technology - and now I'm in the position of Chief Technology Officer and Deputy Director.

Christ Church is a fantastic organisation which invests well in its people and technology and I'm fortunate to work with some great colleagues who I'm lucky enough to call friends. Christ Church is a great community where you can build a real career and follow your aspirations."

  • Current role: Operations Officer, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Social Sciences
  • Graduated in: BA (Hons) Drama

“I cherished my time as a Christ Church student so much so that I wanted to become a permanent member of the Christ Church community. I have been lucky enough to work here since graduating in 2020 and I am still so overwhelmed by the abundance of opportunities that are on offer for staff, students and graduates. The community here at Christ Church is welcoming and nurturing, especially in developing you as a professional individual. Whilst working within the Operations Team, I have still been able to undertake the Microsoft Office Specialise training with the Careers and Enterprise team as a graduate. These training sessions have been incredibly insightful and supportive - I appreciated learning virtually with a group of other students and graduates that also signed onto the workshops. Having these opportunities to develop professionally and personally at Christ Church is essential to getting the most of your student experience, I would not have wanted it to be any other way.”

"Since joining CCCU I have worked hard, and studied hard, and I believe this dedication and drive has been rewarded. I could not have done this without the opportunities and support which I have had at CCCU. The university has been the reason I have got to the position I am working in today and I am forever thankful. I have had the opportunity to work with great people, who have seen good in me, who have mentored and helped me. I have had the opportunity to grow my skills academically here at the university which has allowed me to develop and allow me to take on new roles and achieve more. Working at CCCU is an amazing experience, and increased my skill set, my confidence, my knowledge, and my experience immeasurably. My line managers have always been so supportive, guiding and pointing me in the right direction and they have really nurtured my learning and progression every step of the way. During my time here there has also been a raft of other courses, training, development opportunities both work related, and for personal development including for my mental and physical health, which I have taken part in along the way, which has further helped me become better at my job and a more well-rounded person.

It is a great place to work, and with such a strong culture for professional and personal development. I can honestly say working at CCCU has been the best experience I have ever had, and I recommend it to anyone."
