Monday 19 September - what does this mean for me?

New students

Please be assured that your student experience is our priority, and we will ensure that there is limited disruption to your important Welcome Week.

  • If you were due to come onto campus for a welcome activity on Monday 19 September this will now be rescheduled as part of your Welcome Week from 20 September or as part of your first week of teaching, which for most students starts on 26 September. Please re-check your Welcome Schedules which will be updated shortly.

  • If you had an online library, IT or learning skills session scheduled, you will be able to watch this back later in your own time via your Welcome Hub. There are also self-guided audio tours of the Library available throughout the first few weeks.

  • The three health courses that were scheduled to attend their Uniform Measure and Issue event on Monday 19 September will receive an email from health.uniform@canterbury.ac.uk with their revised schedule. Please note all health courses scheduled Tuesday to Friday for the Measure and Issue Event remain unchanged. Occupational Health checks will not be affected.

  • You will not be able to collect your Smartcard on this day.

  • For those who had appointments with different services, such as the Student Wellbeing Team, these will be rearranged.
  • If you're registered and expecting a Student Finance England payment on Monday 19 Sep you'll now get your payment on Friday 16 Sep.

  • All other scheduled welcome activities and events will run as planned between 20-23 September – please check your Welcome Schedule and welcome event listings.

We strongly recommend that you come onto campus to visit the Welcome Fair and Freshers’ Fayre and other scheduled sessions with your course team during the other days of Welcome Week, so you can be confident to start your first week of teaching with all the information you need.

Please check UniTimetables for details of your first weeks of teaching – your course team may email your University email address if you require any further information, such as if you need to be in a specific group. Your course team will be able to answer any questions you may have about your teaching timetable during your course’s welcome activities.

International students

  • The International Team will be available from 9.30am in Augustine House on Monday 19 September to introduce the International Team, talk through the international welcome programme for the week and answer any questions. There will then be a chance to watch a live stream of the Queen’s funeral. Your International Welcome Talk will be on Wednesday 21 September at 3pm in Augustine House.
  • If you have an appointment with the UK Compliance Team at Augustine House for ID checks these will continue. Please note that Post Offices will be closed on Monday 19 September so you will need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit on Friday. If you can’t collect it before your appointment on Monday then you should reschedule the appointment.

Support for all

The Students’ Union Lounge in the St. George’s Centre will be open from 10.30am and live streaming the funeral from 11am, providing a space for students to come together and not feel alone on this day. Students’ Union social activities planned for the evening will continue as we felt it was still important to offer you opportunities to connect with each other.

On the Medway campus, the funeral will be live streamed from Pilkington 008 and the Chaplain will be on hand for support.

We appreciate that this sad event will affect our community in different ways, so please remember that there is a range of emotional wellbeing support available for our students. Chooseday Chill will take place on Tuesday 20 September at Augustine House from 5-7pm and is an opportunity for students to chat with the Student Wellbeing teams over free tea and toast.

The security team will remain on duty 24/7 across all campuses and in an emergency, they can be contacted via the SafeZone App or on 01227 922111.
