Christmas cheer spread to Folkestone Rainbow Centre

Staff and students spread Christmas joy by donating gifts to the Folkestone Rainbow Centre’s Winter Shelter project.

The volunteering team, alongside the Chaplaincy, wrapped the donated items including thermal hats, gloves, toiletry gift sets with body wash, deodorant and aftershave, refillable water bottles, as well as tins of biscuits and sweets.

Mary Stredwick, Chief Executive at the Rainbow Centre thanked the University’s students and staff:

‘On behalf of everyone here at the Folkestone Rainbow Centre, thank you both and all your supporters for the Christmas gifts you have donated to our clients.

‘You have certainly brought some good cheer to them, especially our Winter Shelter Guests, who tend not to have a family at Christmas and please convey our gratitude to your students and staff for supporting us!

‘We are incredibly grateful and inspired when individuals and organisations come together to support a good cause.

‘You will be pleased to know that we are running the Winter Shelter this year from a local B&B, helping keep the homeless safe during the coldest months of the year. In partnership with other agencies, Kellie, our Winter Shelter Coordinator, is working tirelessly with clients to find move-on accommodation.’

Kellie Schafer, who previously worked in the University’s Peer Mentoring team, collaborated with Christ Church’s volunteering team and Maddie Thorpe in the Chaplaincy

Lucy Woodward, Enterprise and Engagement Manager (Third Sector) at Christ Church, said: “As a University, we are committed to supporting local charities through volunteering, fundraising and initiatives such as this. It is wonderful to see the generosity of our students and staff making a real difference in the community.”

Established in 2009, The Folkestone Churches Winter Shelter project, by Churches Together Folkestone, works with local partner agencies, to rehouse homeless and vulnerable people offering places at local B&Bs through a referral process, having witnessed the hardships they face.
