Foundation year students in Engineering will be able to pitch their ideas in a Dragon’s Den style competition with the opportunity to win £3,000 in funding to bring their innovative designs to life.

Students on the General Engineering Module will be able to take part in the competition, which aims at support the development of their design and analysis skills within an industry setting.

The University is partnering with the Engineers in Business Fellowship (EIBF) who are funding this year’s competition. The EIBF is a charity that encourages engineering students to get involved in business innovation, develop a passion for entrepreneurship and help solve real world problems.

Students will need to devise an engineering design that optimizes operations and boost profitability for local company, the Sublime Group. After crafting their preliminary designs, students will pitch their ideas directly to the joinery company. The most outstanding design will be chosen by the client and be awarded the prize.

The EIBF competition will form part of a CDIO project for students, working with a real industry partner that calls for the application of theory in practice and to develop novel engineering products. Providing a real industrial problem that challenges engineering students to consider engineering design, engineering materials, manufacturing, standard components, fixes and fittings, and tolerance considerations in their projects.

Canterbury Christ Church University is one of only a handful of universities in the UK to offer the pioneering CDIO international engineering education model. It was developed by the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with business which takes a problem-based, creative approach to addressing real world issues.
