Celebrating the UK’s best new works by composers writing for classic, jazz and sound art in the UK, Dr Hall has been nominated in the category of Sound Art for her radiophonic piece Waves of Resistance (radio art without borders).   

Dr Magz Hall was delighted to be nominated amongst other recognized artists in six different categories.  

“It’s fantastic for my sound work Waves of Resistance to be recognised nationally and be a nominee for an Ivor Composer Award alongside such talented artists,” she said.  

“Waves of Resistance is a radio art work about how radio can help us in times of isolation. I was commissioned for Galway 2020 by Lousie Manifold for the Aerial Sparks Project, and was installed during the pandemic on the island of Innis Orr. It has been aired on the radio in Ireland and Scotland and streamed at festivals in the UK and the Netherlands. It was funded by the Irish Arts Council and the Irish Marine Institute.” 

Each winner will receive an Ivor Novello Award, recognised as a pinnacle of achievement since they were first presented in 1956. An Ivor represents peer recognition as they are judged by fellow composers and music creators. 

This month Magz also won an Oram Award, which includes a bursary of £1500 to kickstart a new project. The Oram Awards recognise emerging artists in music, sound and related technologies, celebrating innovative women, girls and gender minorities in these fields. 

The Ivors awards will take place on Wednesday 8 December at the British Museum in London. 

All six winners will be profiled in an upcoming series on BBC Radio 3 Unclassified with Elizabeth Alker, over the course of six weeks (one artist for each week).
