The University is delighted to be part of Being Human, the UK's only national festival of the humanities.

Being Human is led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts & Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.

Taking place in November each year, this festival celebrates humanities research through public engagement, and brings together universities, museums, research organisations, and community and commercial partners.  Being Human events make research in the humanities accessible to non-specialist audiences and demonstrate its relevance to our everyday lives.

Gothic Games Night will take place on 13 November 2021 as part of the festival.  The event comprises three games, all based around or inspired by gothic literature.

Players will test their knowledge with a round of Gothic Lit Trivia, played in teams, pub-quiz style.

Also on offer is an immersive life-size board game called Save Kent from Dracula, where teams compete to get their bubbles to safety amidst the twin threats of a vampire invasion and a global pandemic.

In the third game, Create Your Own Gothic Mash-Up, teams play for laughs as they rearrange iconic scenes from famous novels past and present.

Organised by colleagues from English Literature, Creative and Professional Writing, the International Centre for Victorian Women Writers, and Games Design, the event is free and open to the public.

People can attend the event at St John’s Church, Church Lane, Barham, Canterbury from 7pm to 9.30pm.

Dr Susan Civale, Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities & Educational Studies and the University’s Being Human project lead, said: ”The aim of the event is to get people to engage with gothic literature through play.  Bringing together classics like Frankenstein and Jane Eyre with modern tales like The Haunting of Hill House and Twilight, Gothic Games Night encourages a creative irreverence that we hope will be both educational and fun.”

Refreshments and seating will be available throughout the event. Parking is also available on site. Click here to book: Gothic Games Night | Being Human Festival
