The visit marked a significant diplomatic and institutional moment in the University’s growing relationship with Sri Lanka and reflected its strengthening international standing as a values-led partner in education, human development and purposeful global engagement.

It brought together a distinguished gathering of academic leaders, diplomats, and community representatives. Including,  H E Nimal Senadheera, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom, Dr Dulan Hettiarachchi, Chairman of the Task Force for Tourism (Western Province), Sri Lanka, Ven Dr Witharandeniye Kassapa Maha Thera OBE, Deputy Buddhist Prelate of Great Britain (Malwatta Chapter), and Brigadier Dilantha Fernando, Defence Adviser to the High Commission of Sri Lanka in London.

The visit also built on the recent recognition of Canterbury Christ Church University’s engagement in Sri Lanka. Earlier this year, Professor Mohamed Abdel-Maguid, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, Student Growth and Global Engagement, was recognised during the Gangaramaya Temple Perahera 2026, receiving an honour from the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in recognition of his contribution to inclusive global education and transnational partnership development.

These engagements reflect the continued strengthening of the University’s relationship with Sri Lanka. It’s growing role as a trusted partner in values-led international collaboration, and commitment to work across borders not only to widen academic opportunities, but also to advance cultural understanding, human development and a shared global purpose.
