Baton of Hope

Every year on 10 September, people around the world come together to mark World Suicide Prevention Day and raise awareness of suicide prevention.

At Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), we’re proud to be part of the nationwide Baton of Hope initiative — where a symbolic baton is carried through UK cities to spark conversations about mental health and inspire hope. Over the coming weeks, join us for a series of events:

12 September: No one Here is Me, Anselm Studio

A powerful play created from real-life interviews, exploring the complex issues surrounding men’s mental health. Balancing stories of loss and survival, this moving performance shines a light on the struggles many face while offering a message of hope.

17 September: Baton of Hope Poetry Competition

We’re inviting our CCCU community — students and staff — to take part in a Haiku Poetry Competition on the theme “Hope Together.” Reflect on what hope means to you, how it connects us, and how together we can build a kinder, more supportive community. Whether you’re an experienced poet or a first timer, we’d love to hear your voice.

A Haiku is a short form of poetry made up of three lines: the first line has 5 syllables, the second 7, and the third 5.

Please submit your Haiku by email to kent.maps@canterbury.ac.uk by 17 September, 1pm.

A student and staff winner of the competition will each receive a CCCU Bookshop £30 voucher. See below for further information.

22 September: Together for Hope - Canterbury Baton of Hope, Augustine House

We’re proud to welcome the Baton to Canterbury Christ Church University as it makes its way through Kent and Medway.

Join us for an inspiring talk from Ben West, a leading UK mental health campaigner who turned personal tragedy into powerful action, raising awareness of suicide prevention and championing mental health education in schools. His work has touched thousands and earned national acclaim.

Meet a range of local organisations championing mental wellbeing, enjoy uplifting performances, and take your chance to hold the Baton itself.

In coming together to share our hopes, we can raise awareness of the importance of mental health and remind one another that no one is alone.
