ECPD joins East Kent Hospitals charity dementia appeal

25 June 2015

The England Centre for Practice Development is supporting the East Kent Hospitals Charity Dementia Appeal, which aims to raise £500,000 to help support people with dementia whilst staying in hospital.

he Centre has been instrumental in establishing the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Dementia Care Innovation Hub, which works to promote dementia awareness and improve care for people with dementia across the south east. It also supported the launch of the Kent Dementia Action Alliance last year, with the aim of bringing together groups from all walks of society dedicated to transforming the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers.

Carrie Jackson, Director of the England Centre for Practice Development, said: “We are delighted to be members of the fundraising committee and supporting innovative ways of fundraising for such work. It complements our programmes of research and innovation, focusing on improving the quality of life and services for people living with dementia and their families. Our extensive networks will be beneficial to fundraising activities.”

East Kent Hospitals Charity Dementia Appeal is spread across the five hospitals in East Kent. It will fund multiple projects to help support patients with dementia and make their time spent in hospital more enjoyable. The Charity’s goal is that every patient living with dementia will leave hospital as fit and healthy as possible, rather than experience a decline in their condition that can happen when a person is in an unfamiliar environment for a length of time. The projects will revolve around the everyday work of the hospitals to make sure they quickly deliver benefits for patients and their carers, families and friends.

The funds will support:

  • Arts activity sessions for patients with dementia
  • Dementia cafes which will provide information to patients and carers
  • Therapeutic and interactive dementia-friendly spaces across all our sites
  • Changes to the environment to promote relaxation, by means of buying special clocks, wall coverings and reminiscence items
