Canterbury Christ Church University lecturer wins prestigious Green Gown award

03 December 2019

Zulfi Ali, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, has won a prestigious Green Gown Award in the ‘Sustainability Champion – Staff’ category.

As the Climate Crisis is increasingly recognised as the most pressing issue our world faces, the Green Gown Awards put a spotlight on the innovative and inspiring sustainability work taking place in universities and colleges to create a brighter future for their students.

Mr Ali won the award for his work in developing Project 93, an innovative initiative to enrich the academic experience, enhance critical engagement and encourage social activism among the student and colleagues at the University.

Project 93 was created in 2016 with seed funding from the Futures Initiative and has organised over 50 events including lectures, discussion gatherings, film screenings, interactive workshops, poetry readings and podcast projects, all on sustainability and social justice related themes. Project 93 has also engaged and collaborated with a range of diverse audiences including the staff equality networks, various faculties and departments and several student societies.

Iain Patton, Chief Executive of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges said: “Judges were blown away by the dynamism, range and scale of Zulfi’s approach to enriching the academic experience, encouraging social activism inspiring across the university a community of critical thinkers. Huge transferability and reach!”

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, said: “This award is tremendous national recognition of Zulfi’s passion for transforming the student learning experience at the University. The far-reaching themes of sustainability are fundamental to our work and this award is testament to Zulfi’s commitment to ensuring that our graduates are aware and active in areas of environmental and social justice.”

This is the third year in which the University has won a Green Gown Award. In 2017, we won a national Green Gown Award and in 2018 an International Green Gown Award, both in the Continuous Improvement category.
